We don't really know what's going on with the web and possibly on-device Market right now, but we do know that it's fallen a bit sick, throwing Server Error pages left and right. At first, I thought the apps I was looking at were getting deleted, but then I noticed that the familiar-looking screen actually mentions a server error. After trying 10 more random apps, I got a total of 7 consistent errors and 4 successes. According to our quick polls on Twitter and Facebook, you guys are experiencing the same thing, so it's not just tied to my Market account.

We've reached out to the Android community team for a comment, but in the meantime all you and I can do is idly watch the Market fail from the sidelines. We'll update this post when we know more.

Here are some of the failing apps: 1, 2, 3, 4.

Update 6/2 10:30 p.m. PT: Things seem to be back. Never mind - the Market on my Tab 10.1 is hosed, so looks like the fire hasn't been put out yet. We'll work with Google to try to figure out what went wrong today.

Update: 6/3 12:30 a.m. PT: All back now for me. How about you?

Update: 6/3 1:30 p.m. PT: Google reached out to us and let us know everything was back to normal. No reason was given.

I was just looking for information on this matter. Not only are downloads failing on my device, but the website has been giving me issues. Purchased items are no longer showing up as having been purchased, but instead are asking me to purchase them again.

Also, when I try to install an application via the website for a particular device, it stalls out trying to list my Android devices.

Hopefully this is fixed soon, since I'm trying to set up the new Asus Transformer that arrived today ...

  • tcollum

My downloads are working fine, I just have to be quick and hit 'Retry' and then download, before another one pops up :P

    • Patrick

Then count yourself lucky, since anytime I access anything other than viewing an app description I get a server error ...

    • Deltaechoe

I just get download unsuccessful errors on device no matter what i do

  • Someone

Normally when I upload a new version of my app, lots of (new) people will download it, but with my last update no one did.

Thought it was a failure on my part (my app is suddenly not good anymore?) so I was kind of shocked when I woke up this morning to figure out that only 1 person downloaded the app.

I'm very angry right now at those who are responsible for this.

  • Deltaechoe

Google royally screwed up, back to trying to find a recent titanium backup apk to sideload into cm7 so i can actually get my apps...

  • nikki

This happened to me too when I was trying to purchase the app Absolute System Root Tools, and as far as I noticed it was only for that one. thankfully I was able to install it properly. I thought that error only happens when you don't have internet connection.

    this is pissing me off

  • anon

Chill, people, it'll be back soon.

    • Patrick

I understand that eventually the system will be back up. However, this is frustrating on 2 different levels.

      1. Personally, it's really quite annoying. *When* I can actually access my Market account page, it properly shows my purchased applications. However, whenever I visit the individual pages for those applications, the system does not register that I have purchased them and asks me for payment information again. I can browse the Market on the device, but no applications will download; I can browse the Market online, but nearly 90% of the time it errors out when trying to display the list of Android devices I have associated with my account.

      2. In the greater scheme of things, errors and problems with the Market can be seen as a detriment to the Android ecosystem as a whole. If the system goes down and there is no communication about what the problem is, that is quite disconcerting for developers. And considering that next week is Apple's WWDC (with a major emphasis on iOS 5), Google should be doing all it can to woo developers.

Android barely has application parity with iOS, and unfortunately it's still very lopsided. While nearly all of the functionality of iOS apps are available in Android equivalents, most of the Android counterparts are complete eyesores, lack responsiveness, and feel like a chore to use.

I don't want iOS clones, but I do want developers to actually *care* about their users and create a pleasant experience. Overall, UX sucks on Android, and Market issues are not the solution to getting developers to put more effort into the platform.

For a temporary server issue, you worry a lot about a completely unrelated OS.

we pay good money to access the market (data plan) so no, i wont chill............

      • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

FWIW, Google is aware, seems like we were the first ones to notify them, as they seemed surprised.

      • anon

Don't waste your quota then, just wait, and chill in the meantime.

        • zach

luckily it seems to be fixed now... anon, you are just ridiculous

        • anon

I chilled for a few hours, and now it's fixed.
End result: No stress and working market that was down for a short time.

You stressed and moaned and insulted me, and now it's fixed.
End result: Your stress levels are higher, you're rude, and working market that was down for a short time.

          Delta:
You're rude and stressed and I'm not. Based on this fact, I would question who or what is ridiculous.

  • Someone

    It's not fixed.

Why doesn't Google give any more information?

  • Seph

    oh so that's what happened!
The error gave me a chance to update US-only Google apps - Books, Earth and Music. haha. I'm in Asia by the way.

    • Nikki

That's what I was wondering about too! I'm also in Asia and got an update for google apps.

  • anon

BTW, this is not app-specific, it's intermittent (probably a general issue with their database).

For example, https://market.android.com/details?id=apps_topselling_new_free wouldn't load, and then a few minutes later, it would.

  • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Possibly related or same issue listed as New here, although I don't think it describes the problem we're having today: https://market.android.com/support/bin/static.py?page=known_issues.cs

  • torsrex

Working great for me here in norway.

  • http://graesen.com Eh, just some guy

Not fixed for me. Free apps and updates work for me, but purchasing apps returns server error. Web market gives me errors too, continually asks me to re-sign in.

I emailed Google's market help at about 7pm central time about it, but had this issue as early as noon central time. Hopefully this gets fixed soon...

  • ArchAngel

    Everything is fine for me

  • bill

It's not back to normal for all. I tried to purchase touchretouch and took 3 tries to download and when it showed it was installed it never showed up in my app drawer, had to get a refund
