UPDATE: Unfortunately, this update doesn't work on Honeycomb devices.

When the Netflix app first dropped, it only supported a handful of devices, which (naturally) caused a not-so-positive reaction from the bulk of the Android community. The result? A slew of hacked .apk files that allowed Netflix to operate correctly on unsupported devices.

Those days are gone now, though - Netflix has pushed an update to its official app that removes the "device check", so it should work on all most devices (Android 2.2 and above, of course). To test that theory, I gave it a go on my OG Droid running CM7, and it worked flawlessly.

At the time of writing this, the update had not yet hit the web market, so you'll have to download it directly from the Android Market on your device.

If you decide to give it a try, drop us a line in the comments and let us know if works correctly for you, along with your device info (model, ROM, etc.).

  • Chahk

Gives an error on my Nook Color running CM7.1 nightly. Something about time not being correct on my device, which I believe is a misnomer, and the actual error is something unrelated.

    • Jeff

Same thing for me, frustrating, would it have to do with the processor automatically upshifting the freqency?

  • Derek

Works great on my Nexus S running CM7, HTC HD2 running android, but still nothing on my Motorola Xoom. What a bummer.

    • tom

Still not able to download to my Incredible 2.

  • Shawn

Works great on my droid x running stock 2.2.

    • Cory

How did you get it to run on dx? I find it in the market website but not using the app. When I try to download it from the market site, it tells me my phone is not supported

      • shawn

Downloaded the apk from droid-life.com and put it on my phone from my computer then used astro file manger to install it.

        • Cory

didn't need to put it on my computer first, went to the site from my dx and it works perfectly. Thanks a ton shawn

  • Austin

Not in the market for me yet on the galaxy s 4g. And I downloaded the one you had on the sure and it closes when I try to log in

  • Scooterman1

Does not work on EVO running Fresh 4.0. 0.4

  • Scott

Does not work on the Thunderbolt.

  • Chocho

Will run on all devices without saying "unsupported" but may not work if you don't have proper DRM "software" under the scenes.

  • http://iandouglas.com Ian Douglas

Doesn't work on Samsung Tab 10.1 from Google IO, still "not supported".

I love how DroidLife said it'll work on "most" devices, then adds a P.S. of "well, might be hit or miss" and now AP has a title of "should work on all devices"...

    • http://iandouglas.com Ian Douglas

Unless by "should work on all devices" you mean "it'll work to browse and manage your queue, but not to actually PLAY streaming movies..."

      ?

      • Cameron Summerson

I guess I should add that it's still not for Honeycomb devices. Updating.

        • http://iandouglas.com Ian Douglas

Pretty sure they've said it won't work on anything prior to 2.2 as well?

Maybe the title of the post should change to "works on more devices" instead of "should work on all"? Just my $0.02.

Holy crap--works on my rooted Nook Color running CM7 7.0.3. But not showing up in Market on my rooted TBolt.

  • bird

Nothing yet for my Galaxy S. Still does not show up at all on the handset and still gives device prompt in market. :(

  • jason

of course, questionable permissions: "read sensitive log data", "read phone state and identity", "retrieve running applications". there shouldn't be a pass just because they're netflix.

  • John

Not working on the G2x. Starts up then exits immediately.

  • Travis

doesn't work on rooted Samsung Captivate.

Couldn't find it in the market, so I sideloaded it. It crashes after logging in. No errors, just disappears.

Use a 2.3 rom on the captivate and it will work

  • NuLL.n.VoiD

Working on OG Droid. Liquid Gingerbread 1.8 & CorCor67 LV kernel set at 1000. Video has some minor skipping but I believe that is due to wi-fi signal strength. Still very watchable and very cool.

  • Cookie

Won't play on stock Thunderbolt. Crashes back to Netflix queue.

  • Mau
