If you happen to own a Samsung Captivate, HTC Aria, or HTC Inspire 4G, then the dream of many, many Android owners on AT&T is about to be yours - the ability to legitimately sideload apps. AT&T lifted its sideloading-barrier on the newly released Samsung Infuse 4G, and naturally, the question arose: What about older Android devices? Now we have our answer.

This means that you will be able to enjoy the little pleasures that other Android users currently have - like the Amazon Appstore and non-market apps like wireless tether. According to the above document obtained by Android Central, the OTA update should start rolling out today to the aforementioned devices, so make sure to let us know when you get yours.

And why not the Atrix? It's been the flagship device for the past 3 months for AT&T and should get SOME attention in this matter.

  • right_mr

Absolutely spot on. What about the atrix. Surely this should also be getting an ota...almost as annoying is how you need to create a dummy apn to turn the data off. That is also a blood boiling inducer for me...

  • Glenn

This is something Htc and Samsung have done. If you want your Atrix to have sideloading then talk to motorolla. There is a reason none of their phones made the list. Or you could just use superoneclick, it's really that easy.

I just checked on my inspire and it says I am up to date. However now I can't check again for another 24 hours.

  • Joshp406

Backflip shoulda gotten this update, but NO! AT&T leaves us in the cold once again!

    • Itwasntme876

Backflip didnt get it because its the worst phone ever and you shouldn't have bought it in the first place. Good luck getting anything useful on that phone...ever.

  • Steve

For anyone who has to wait 24 hours, just change your date ahead by a day and you'll be able to check again.

  • Pawlok

I love my Aria, but it is 'unlocked' now without a provider, as I will be going to Europe soon and will take it with me. Since I DID buy the phone from AT&T (ago) can you please point me the way so I can download the update somehow and update it the same way I went from Eclair 2.1 to Froyo 2.2.2...thank you

  • Bill

Has anyone received an update yet? So far nothing and I have all 3 phones to work with.

  • Jody

    HTC Inspire here.. Nada yet.

  • steveo314

    Negative on my Samy Cappy.

  • steveo314

    Can't wait for it though.

  • Bill

I just installed Amazon AppStore on my Captivate. Seems to be working fine. allowed me to install an app. Loaded beautiful widgets from a .apk file also. Seems as if AT&T has updated my Captivate with no interaction from me.

  • David

I talked to AT&T about the OTA update and they said it would most likely take 48 hrs to receive the update. Well 48 hours should be over at about 8 p.m. today. Can't wait. If you want it just give them a call and they push the update to your phone.

  • Sean

    Samsung captivate
Just called Samsung still haven't got the update!

  • Corina

I don't have the update for my Samsung Captivate, either. AT&T is notoriously slow at rolling out these OTA updates. Is there any place I can download it myself? My patience is wearing thin.
