If you've been following the Google I/O coverage today at all, you are probably aware that Google and Samsung gave out about 5,000 Galaxy Tab 10.1 units early to all conference attendees. I didn't take the XOOM with me to the conference to avoid carrying extra bulk, so I didn't have a chance to compare the 10.1 to it while doing the deep dive first look.

Now that I got home and put the two side-by-side... let's just say it's not even funny how much bulkier the XOOM is. The 8.6mm Galaxy Tab 10.1 is not here to mess around, making the 13mm XOOM looks like a year-old clunker.

Judge for yourself:

Thanks for the comparison pics Artem! Are you going to do an in-depth review of the Galaxy Tab 10.1? If so, looking forward to seeing it!

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Yeah, since I got it in-hand and I got it early, might as well use the advantage and do a full review. I'll see what I can do this wkend.

      • http://www.transformerforums.com wicked

Sweet! Can't wait. I might be picking one up.

  • Hooty

Looks like Samsung is about to steal HTC's crown for best Android manufacturer.

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Outside of having no MicroSD, MicroUSB, or MicroHDMI, the Tab seems superior to the XOOM in physical characteristics and the same in terms of software. But yeah, physically, Samsung BROUGHT IT.

and fixibility. seems Samsung is going for a direct ipad replacement.

How much of a downer is no microSD. It was one thing that I thought ok, no USB fine, but some easy way to transfer files would be good. But now no microSD sounds like a big downer to me

Now *this* is a laptop replacement.... even though I still think Tegra 2 is too weak...

@Artem: Its not hard to make a smaller package if you deliver only half the content... (written on my xoom)

    Artem,

If you have an iPad2, make comparison like this as well :D

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

I ain't got no such thing!

  • Franky

    Without USB = without me.

    What a shame.

  • Bootup

    No USB
    No MicroSD
    No MicroHDMI

So umm, what does it have?

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Pretty much none of those things.

  • Natey

Artem, does it have the super AMOLED Plus screen on it?

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Absolutely doesn't. It's a slight step-up from the XOOM but it's still a regular LCD.

This is a special edition, the original Samsung Galaxy tab 10.1 going to be on sale on June 8, if you have micro usb.

  • Johnny

I am so torn now. I been waiting for this but no micro sd is why I didn't get the ipad2

I hope samsung with make an announcement and clear up the micro sd debate.

Let's see...no micro usb....no 5 mega pixel camera....same wxga screen....oh...does the wifi only version come with gps like my wifi xoom? I learned my lesson last year, with the Galaxy Tab. Have fun with Samsung, I'm riding with Motorola.

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Yeah, the 3MP Samsung Tab 10.1 camera kind of sucks. Like, a lot. XOOM's 5MP camera is much better, I believe.

I've been loving the tablet more than I thought I would. The weight and size is pretty nice.

I found it an amusing choice to give away this one with no USB as they were just discussing Android being able to have USB hosting. Also showing it can work with game controllers. The SD card slot isn't a big deal for me personally as I can't even make use of the 16gb in my phone yet. It's not excuse not to put one, but it at least won't affect me.

USB will add bulk for the size, it just will. So it's hard to choose. I sure hope keyboard accessories won't be absurd.

Still really liking the device, with or without the added option ports. The hdmi out would have been nice as well, that's one I think I'll actually miss. Oh well, where's that Droid Bionic?

My guess is the Tab will do HDMI just fine via an adaptor.
