Shortly after Honeycomb dropped, we were told that the next version of Android would bridge the gap between tablets and phones. That bridge was officially announced this morning at Google I/O: Ice Cream Sandwich.

Ice Cream Sandwich will be the newest version of Android, and it's going to bring the goodness of Honeycomb to phones, along with Gingerbread features to tablets. The update is due out in Q4 of this year, and the goal is to unify the Android experience across devices, which is a huge step towards ending fragmentation as we know it.

It's clear that between this and the Android Alliance, Google has really paid attention to the biggest problems in Android and is making a collaborative effort to efficiently address them.

His love for Android has been noticed in some unlikely places - he once went to a concert and upon meeting the band, the singer said "You're like, Android king, right? Can you you tell me why this doesn't run flash?" and handed Cam his Optimus S.

  • I've been hearing of this all morning and I can't wait for it to be out :D
Maybe soon they'll release the source code for honeycomb so devs can port it over too (:

  • So Ice cream will be for both tablets and phones?

  • I am so glad I chose android over ios and windows. Lets hope this new 18 month update initiative goes through successfully. Can't wait.

don't get too excited, this was very vague. expecting in my case motorola and at&t to work together to get gingerbread and then ice cream both out by end of year just won't happen. motorola atrix user here. my first and probably last android device. i'll be moving back to iphone when 5 is available.

  • I am happy to hear that this is targeted at unifying but until now all reports said it was nothing more than allowing cross platform apps but not exactly a melding of the interface,
Can someone give more details on this?

Would be so cool if true!

  • if i buy the nexus s by next year (my contract ends then)will it receive ice cream sandwich? or will there be a new nexus?

  • Will this update be for Nexus One as well??
