One of the most popular questions about rooting the ThunderBolt is how to undo the process and return to stock, which renews your eligibility for customer support. Well, here you go:

Instructions

Please read the whole tutorial first, and pay attention to every detail. Note that your battery needs to be charged to at least 40% at the beginning of the process, and remember to check the MD5 sums of all downloaded files before diving in. As always, neither Android Police nor Team AndIRC are responsible for any damage this may cause to your phone, and, needless to say, returning to stock means you will no longer be able to use root apps like ShootMe and Titanium Backup.

First, download the following files:

Next, push busybox and misc.img.

    adb push misc.img /data/local/

    adb push busybox /data/local/

    adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/busybox

To gain root and flash misc.img:

    adb shell

    su

    /data/local/busybox md5sum /data/local/misc.img

If the output is anything other than "c88dd947eb3b36eec90503a3525ae0de," stop and start over again.

Now let's write misc.img:

    dd if=/data/local/misc.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p17

Rename "PG05IMG_Mecha_VERIZON_WWE_1.12.605.6_Radio_1.16.00.0223r_NV_8k_1.41_9k_1.64_
release_174685_signed.zip" to "PG05IMG.zip" before placing it on your SD card.

Finally, reboot into bootloader mode by entering the following command. Allow the stock firmware to flash.

    adb reboot bootloader

You're done - your phone should now be stock, S-ON.

useful for when i return this battey hungry piece of shit after the weekend

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Ha, you should try EVO 4G if you want to see a shitty battery.

    • Alan

Just turn off the LTE and use the 3 G

  • Matt

My battery life has been fine in 3g.

  • Boobs

My battery is fine even with 4G running all the time.

I get about 8 to 9 hours with moderate use.

Don't know what all the fuss is about.

    • jjssdkfs

i got 12 hours in 4g downloading torrents no charching with stock battery

  • superthrust

So, while trying to do step 2, typing su, always gives me permission denied. Any idea?

    • Rob

Go to the phone and hit "Allow" It should show up as allow for source unknown.

  • soullessknight

out of curiosity but does this bring back the 1 year warranty since its back to stock or does it leave some kinda of trace that still make the warranty void

    • superthrust

as long as you dont mention root, it should be fine. but if you got it from best buy with black tie protection, root is covered. Mine is. and it says so in the ToC.

      • soullessknight

ahhh very nice! thank you for the super fast response =D

  • Eric

When I attempt to write misc.img I recieve the following error "/dev/block/mmcblk0p17: cannot open for write: Permission denied". When I rooted the phone, I had no problem with this command, now attempting to unroot and I'm stuck! Please help!!!

    • superthrust

I had issues with that too.

      adb shell
      su
      "Permission Denied"

      thats all i get.

  • Eric

Got it to work finally. Just kept trying the "su" command until superuser recognized it on the phone.

  • spinwizard

Battery life is great, if I don't use my phone for anything but "phone". Today I started off with 100%. Wiped Battery stats at 7AM, went to work, ran Padora from 9a to about 1p, the battery was at 5%. Did a *228 on my Fascinaste, worked till 5, with pandora on again, had 72% when I got home about 6:30. Time to take the T-Bolt back to BB and try the SGS2 w/ 4G/lte comming April 7 (maybe) w/ a 1650 mah battey and a screen I can see outside!

As always, neither Android Police nor Team AndIRC are responsible for any damage this may cause to your phone, and, needless to say, returning to stock means you will no longer be able to use root apps like ShootMe and Titanium Backup.

    First, download the following files:
    • Stock firmware (MD5 sum: 7141f5620f6128af77d50587e341f4b0)
    • exploits.zip (MD5 sum: 3b359efd76aac456ba7fb0d6972de3af)

How to get MD5 sums value? 1st download MD5 sums from the website provided.
Extrat Zip files and opens the exe file. It give you some sort of error saying “perhaps run as admin” hit okay next window open as a browser.

    1. Click on Create Sums
    2. Locate your both zip files
    3. Click on add and click OK
    4. It will start batching process and that’s where it will show MD5 sum values. Check each it should be same)
    5. Once you have those values save your file. (You probably won’t need it).

Exploits.zip (extracts them and put them in “C:android-sdk-windowsplatform-tools”) replace with old files. (Same folder when you root your phone)

Mount your phone to comp by plugging USB to your phone. (Make sure its disk mount not sync only) Also your USB Debug is checked by going to setting, applications, development.

Open CMD by going to run on xp or vista in search bar

    cd c:android-sdk-windowsplatform-tools

    Next, push busybox and misc.img.

    adb push misc.img /data/local/
    adb push busybox /data/local/
    adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/busybox

To gain root and flash misc.img:
adb shell (after entering this command it will show $ sign)

Before entering next command makes sure you still have superuser install in your phone because “su” command will ask permission on your phone from superuser to allow “su” command.

su (after entering this command it will show # sign)
    /data/local/busybox md5sum /data/local/misc.img

If the output is anything other than

"c88dd947eb3b36eec90503a3525ae0de," stop and start over again.

    Now let’s write misc.img:

    dd if=/data/local/misc.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p17

release_174685_signed.zip" to "PG05IMG.zip" before placing it on your SD card.

Finally, reboot into bootloader mode by entering the following command. Allow the stock firmware to flash.

exit (This will exit you from # sign)
exit (This will exit you from $ sign)
    adb reboot bootloader

Go to your phone. Wait for to reboot and wait for white screen to show up. Select bootloader by power button, select up using volume button to confirm to flash. Wait for magic to be happens. Could take up to 5-7 mins (don’t freak out)! Once updated, it will show on screen “updated successfully”. Press power button to restart. Once up you are back to stock mode like you receive the phone initially. (You can unplug usb from computer if you want after your phone restart and come to bootloader screen, DO NOT UNPLUG UNTIL YOUR PHONE GO TO BOOT MODE).

You’re done – your phone should now be stock, S-ON.

Thank Justin Case Original post holder!

I have su installed but still cant get it to allow me to gain root why?

    • Sam

Before entering next command makes sure you still have superuser install in your phone because “su” command will ask permission on your phone from superuser to allow “su” command.

Is there any way to unroot without connecting usb? My USB port just broke.. but cant send them in for warranty until unrooted....please let me know if there is any way

  • Me

i would assume u can use terminal emulator and push the files to your sdcard by adb wireless or using a microsd to usb adapter

  • Gfitcher

i cant use the su because i messed up halfway through the process of rooting it and when i got to root it from the begining it just tells me adb: not found when i tell it to reboot bootloader.... any ideas on how to fix this ive been stuck for about a week

    • Sam

I am not sure if this work. But try to do factory reset on your phone... after resetting your phone... make sure to check if your phone still rooted by downloading some root software such as dropcap2...if so than u r in good shape..
Also format your memory card if possible and have that fresh.

From computer: delete all your files and start fresh... hope this will help..

also make sure to check your environment and see if your adb is still there.. check out the video how to root thunderbolt and it shows how to add adb shell in environment..

  • Greg

I have to take my TB in to get a different sim card. Will they be able to see if I'm rooted based on that interaction? I'm about to un-root, but I've made a back up of my current ROM. When I re-root, will I be able to load that from ROM manager?

    • Sam

Yes they can see that especially if the vz tech are geek.

  • MAGGIO

thanks man for the greatest unroot help EVER!, FIXIN TO GET A XOOM, YAY!

  • MorTality

Would this work on a stock phone to undo the OTA update?

  • Tarza4TB

can i use OTA update after unroot?

  • ck3jr

How can I remove the Mr2 update? I'm non rooted.

  • Alex

    What does this mean:
    Rename "PG05IMG_Mecha_VERIZON_WWE_1.12.605.6_Radio_1.16.00.0223r_NV_8k_1.41_9k_1.64_
release_174685_signed.zip" to "PG05IMG.zip" before placing it on your SD card.

In other words: How do I "place it on my SD card" do I issue another adb push command? If so is it:
    adb push PG05IMG.zip /data/local/

    • jo

Are you fucking kidding me? Dumb people and smart phones don't mix.

      • Nocturnhabeo

and you sir are an asshole

  • Josh

It means u didn't read enough before attempting to root your phone if you don't understand the term "rename", or know how to connect your phone as a USB thumbdrive and then place the files on there within windows or Mac os.

But it is as simple as that. The next issue you may have is that windows will hide the .zip extension from you so alot of people end up with pg05IMG.zip.zip. You can disable that forever in folder settings, just tell windows to show the file extensions instead of hiding them.

Jus saying... it seems like ppl with no technical background shouldn't even attempt rooting... You have to know what you are doing when you issue these commands..... insane....

I Have a Problem with my thunderbolt. I rooted it 2 days ago and yesterday i was having alot of issues and now it just shows up on the start up screenwhere it says HTC and will not do anything else.can someone help me out?

  • Mike

When I'm trying to use bootloader/fastboot, it says there is no image, but I for sure have put the renamed "PG05IMG.zip" on the sd card.

I checked the MD5sums and it was correct before I renamed and put it on the sd card.

    Anyone got an Idea?

    • jo

It is probably an issue with your memory card. It will have to be a class 4 card I think. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. I had that problem for a few days, although that was a long time ago. I finally found a SanDisk 2GB card that worked.

  • Mike

No, that wasn't it. As it turns out, it was just that stupid issue with .zip being .zip.zip on some systems based on preferences.

Since I wasn't using my computer, I didn't catch it. Once I removed the extra extension, it worked fine.

Thanks for the attempted help though

  • jayburg21

just bought a rooted thunderbolt i wanna turn it back to stock to be able to get the software updates... just wanna know if that is possible

    • Nocturnhabeo

dude don't unroot it. You get way better support from the unofficial developers like Adrynalyne and jcase

      • jayburg21

Do you know a good 3.0 honeycomb rom...or any good Rom?

        • Nocturnhabeo

BAMF Forever is a good sense 3.0 rom they are working on a 3.5 one as well

  • jayburg21

Well Idk if its the same but I have das band is it the same? Really want a honeycomb rom

    • Nocturnhabeo

There are no Honeycomb roms for Thunderbolt but ICS is coming out so you will be able to use that. It sounds like you have Das BAMF not Das Band the forums that support those roms are here http://teambamf.net/ just set up an account then get yourself a new rom the one you have is old. If you have problems join irc.AndIrc.net #thunderbolt on an IRC chat client.

I got one for you guys...

Getting a warranty replacement soon, so I unrooted and re-imaged back to stock... is there any reason why the touchscreen and menu pad is reversed? Meaning: my search button is my home button, my back button does the menu function and when I swipe a homescreen right, the screen goes left??!?!? everything in the "Y" direction works fine like up/down swipes but everything is reversed about the Y-axis. With my experience in programming usually that could mean 1 little variable is the culprit or that there's a whole list of problems causing that.

I came from CM7.1 stable with no special kernels (only slayher's one that came with it), no undervolting, and only the original stable build of the alpha radio.

    Any help?

  • Huicho02000

I can't get any of those files to download. Does anyone have any other links where I can find them. Also, what does it mean to check sum?
