You thought 1.2GHz was fast? That was just the beginning. The developer of the extremely popular SetCPU app has managed to get a 50% clock speed increase out of the XOOM's dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2, bumping it up to a screaming 1.5GHz. Now, this is sort of like attaching a very large turbo to your four-cylinder hot hatch - that is, your device life may be shortened a little if you're constantly pushing it to the limits. Oh, and it might burn a hole in your pants. But 1.5GHz is an impressive figure regardless, and shows just how powerful the Tegra 2 driving the XOOM really is. It's the fastest Android tablet ... in the world.

Here's a video:

Though demonstrative, it's about as exciting as watching the NASA channel.

Maybe it is the fastest but if all you want to do is to watch 720p high profile mkv (most popular) from your NAS drive... well, you can not. Truly multimedia driven tablet...

MKV is definitely not the most popular video format, I'd say it is somewhat popular at best, and gaining.

AVI and MPEG3/4 are far more ubiquitous standards, though I'm unsure as to the XOOM's ability to play either (and then what codecs thereof).

MKV is gaining popularity, but I wouldn't expect to see manufacturers pushing really hard to get it supported for a while.

All I can say - XDA - plenty of ppl. complaining about video playback problems. Xoom as a multimedia tablet should do two things perfectly (out of the box) browse the web and play videos. It doesn't do any :-(
At the moment ppl. are paying $800 for a privilege becoming beta testers. I dont have iPada and I dont think I will have one... but they will laugh about it on Wednesday... and that will be message for an average Joe - don't buy (xoom) because it is complicated and it does not work.

      VLC ;)
It plays just about any format under the sun--Available in the Android App Market.

There are also other multimedia players available for Android.

Just got back from looking at that Xoom. It's a very nice tablet in all respects, great build quality. Though I'm waiting on the Tegra 3 chips :D

    I have a Xoom....what a disappointment!

It doesnt play a whole lot of file formats out of the box! I had to download qqplayer from the marketplace to do so but it took me a while to find this out. The SD Slot doesnt work...have to wait for a patch to get that going... Will have to send it in to Motorola for at least 6 business days to upgrade to LTE...it doesnt play flash and the damn thing is crazy heavy! Seriously?!?!?!

I'm ashamed to say that I bought into the hype.....

Whatever the iPad2 will be you know it's just going to work as advertised...

    • John J

      LOL @ this guy ^

Will the iPad2 even have an SD slot? Probably not.
Will it have 4g? Certainly not.
Will it have flash? Hell naw.

All you've basically said is that you're going to downgrade in order to have something that isn't what you want.

      Well done, sir, well done.

I have to agree with the posters. The recent androids seem like half-baked piles of rubbish.

I just got Gingerbread on my N1... it's so buggy, choppy and horrible... i dread to think how Honeycomb's like.

Google really need to get their act together. The platform has incredible potential, but if google persists with its teenager-driven-agile-programmer-approach you're never gonna get anything polished. You'll always get transitional piles of buggy rubbish.

Yeah, that's my impression. They are too 'cute' and laid back. Perpetual beta may work in a world where everything is free but they have to realize that this is now dead serious business.

Just spoke to a friend who had Adam for review - 720p mkv high profile was unwatchable.... so Tegra 2 is a problem :-(

  • Mike Lothian

Hmm are people having issues playing media because none of the apps they're using have been optimised for Tegra 2?

I'm sure it has the raw power to play 1080p easily, we just need to wait for the apps to utilise it

Well, than read this and cry:

This was the reason Boxee dumped Tegra 2

  • http://www.droid-den.com Lekky

So am I the only one who laughed at this?

"Oh, and it might burn a hole in your pants."

Who is gonna put a Xoom in their pants pocket?!?!?!

  • Invntor

    How is 1.5GHz a 50% increase over 1.2GHz? Maybe I missed something.

    • ray charles

Stock Xoom runs at 1.0GHz. The 1.2GHz figure was just from initial testing of SetCPU on the Xoom.
