Even though Motorola's original CLIQ received a 2.1 upgrade a long time ago, CLIQ XT owners have been patiently (and impatiently) waiting for the good news ever since. Unfortunately, it will never come, as Motorola's official decision, posted on their Android Software Upgrade News, is to forever doom it to 1.5. It is hard to imagine which differences between the original CLIQ and the XT prompted Motorola to refuse the upgrade, because the phones are really very much the same, and the biggest difference between them is the physical keyboard on the CLIQ.

As if that wasn't enough, about a week ago, Motorola/T-Mobile sent a lovely targeted email to all CLIQ XT owners (in addition to Backflip and potentially some others), inviting them to upgrade to the CLIQ 2. Considering there was no special pricing involved, and in fact those who clicked through to T-Mobile's site were greeted with CLIQ 2's full off-contract price, most people viewed this audacious upsell attempt as a slap in the face.

And today, my unfortunate CLIQ XT friends, it became a double slap.


Here are some cheerful quotes from the forums regarding the upgrade offer. I'm not even going to include the posts that resulted from the news of CLIQ XT getting stuck with 1.5. Yikes.

"I woke up this morning with an email saying upgrade my CliqXT. Wow, I said, did Motorola finally release the Android 2.1 update without a soak test. I was quite excited what a great subject. But then I actually open the email and see it is a SPAM email saying to upgrade to the Cliq2. So I think did Motorola finally give up on Android 2.1, have I been once again been put down and proven wrong and they are not releasing it.

Well after a second I thought, well I guess if we return the XT's to them and they send us a Cliq2 most people would be willing and accepting to be happy about it. So I click on the Upgrade link, It takes me to the T-Mobile site and has the regular price for the phone listed. Well once again I was too wishful and I was once again disappointed.

Now this is directed at Motorola Marketing, I unlike most am NOT on a 2 year contract so I could freely upgrade if I had the money and confidence in the device. However, most people that have a CliqXT are still on their 2 year contract, heck the CliqXT came out in March of last year, so for the most part the min people can be on the contract is 10/24 months, meaning that they can't actually upgrade. Why send out an email to upgrade when the majority of XT people cannot even extend their contracts to do so.

So Motorola, I once again am quite disappointed. Heck, I actually love the new dream I had this morning of returning the XT and getting a Cliq2 back. Might be better at this point for your loyal customers."

"Eight months ago I bought 2 Cliq XT's to Motorola and T-Mobile's fortune. It was also the beginning of a wonderful relationship with the Live Chat support to hear time and again "we appreciate your business but we know nothing about the promised upgrade". As many of you I was fooled and robbed by T-Mobile and Motorola."

    Not to kick XT owners while they are down, but I was under the impression that the Cliq & Cliq XT were entry level androids. As such, you can't really be that mad about it. I mean, you can't buy the cheapest android phone you can find, and then expect high-end android phone support for it.

    It sucks, yes, but I'd be more concerned if this was a story about the Motorola Droid 2, or Droid X.

      I'm happy you aren't concerned about the cliq or the cliq xt but thousands of other people are. It may not be high end but does that mean it shouldnt receive an update ever? I'm not looking for high end support; any support would be nice. I hope Moto pulls the same stuff with your beloved Droid 2 or driod x. See how concerned you are then.

    Yes they are entry level but a promise is still a promise. I have since moved on to the G2 and glad that I have.

      You trust a promise from a corporation? awwww isn't that cute. Seriously. WHY? A corporation does not have morals. A corporation has no ethics. It is a combination of individuals working to make money. As a result when division a says something and division b is charged with making it happen...why should b give a crap about what a said when they are already backlogged with work, underpaid, and frankly as an individual doesn't give a crap if you get your upgrade or not. Sorry but welcome to reality. In know it sucks, but *shrugs* there it is.

    I think HTC has been the only one on top of updates. Motorola only on their high ends, completely abandoning their support for lower ends. And Samsung, high or low end, they don't care. I love my G2 and I was surprised with the 2.1 update to the original Cliq. Anybody know if the hacking community has anything to offer Cliq XT owners?

    I had a Samsung Behold II (well it's my mother-in-laws), a low end phone to be sure, but after going through some hacking forums I got it to 2.1, optimized, no UI modifications. Runs 10x better. It's much more usable.

    I was actually the first to post about this in the Moto Support Forums... needless to say, I am no longer surprised by any incompetent or malicious deeds perpetrated by Motorola. I'm on a G2 now, have been since December, and will remain on HTC for as long as they continue to exhibit stellar support. Eff Moto.

    Any Cliq XT owner who buys another Motorola phone (especially one with BLUR) deserves what they get.

      True story Robert, I learned my lesson. I'm not too hurt since I got my Cliq XT free with a new line and have rooted and upgraded to 2.1 already but I still feel disappointed that Motorola and Tmobile are ok leaving the cliq xt in its current state. As far as apps go - most are designed for 1.6 and higher. I'm sure its only going to get worse. F*** Moto.

    I'm hoping Cliq XT owners get fed up and sell their cliq's very cheap. I'll pick up a couple for simple mobile, flash a custom 2.1 or 2.2 ROM onto it and use them as backup phones.

    IM with lilafc, I have always bought motorola since I started my mobile service. about ten years maybe 10 12 phones The main reason I bought the cliqxt was android market place. But now with no upgrade my market place option are S***. So long Motorola. Bad decision..."better customer experience" Not me.
