Red tape seems to be getting in the way of Notion Ink's plans to ship initial pre-order customers' Adam tablets today. An email sent to us by one of those pre-order customers this morning indicates that it is the FCC's certification process which has put the brakes on the Adam's release:

Greetings from the Notion Ink Support Team!

This e-mail is to inform you that your shipment is ready, but we are awaiting final FCC and CE numbers which are to be printed on the device before we can ship them to you. The Holiday season in December pushed the administrative work and it will be cleared within this week.

We request your kind patience and cooperation till we inform you of your shipment.

As you may already know, the Notion Ink Adam was recently demonstrated to a lot of people at CES 2011, and the Adam was appreciated greatly and loved by everyone.

We really appreciate your continued support and effort that you have infused into creating the Notion Ink Community.

Warm Regards

Notion Ink Support Team

After perusing the blogosphere, it appears numerous pre-order customers have received such e-mails. Hopefully this will be the device's last hurdle before arriving in the hands of consumers.

Maybe my jan 15-22nd date will still hold true then? Hard to believe there are only 50 people in my shoes :-)

    • Aditya Sharma

I am one of them... Mine got delayed to 15th to 22nd week..

    • iuser

pray for best, and prepare for worst. when a company SELLS a communication device without necessary regulatory approvals, wise men should WAIT TILL EVERYTHING IS READY instead of blindly pouring money and feeling bad.

  • vinay

Was waiting for this, Rohan has been silent over the whole FCC thing. This is the problem with unheard of startups. Not trustworthy. My preorder is supposed to ship the 15th. if i get any problems. I'm calling my credit crad company and reporting a fraud

    • Bhujang Patil

Vinay, please pretend it's Jan. 20th, and put it on ebay already.

I promise I will be the first higher bidder.

  • Babu

Vinay - did you pre-order a Pixel QI screen version of Adam ?
There are several folks who would be interested in getting that in case you want to hang up on Notion Ink.

  • bhatu

Hey vinay im ready to give u 900$ for ur adam...im serious..imissed the preorder:-( ..is ur model pixel qi or lcd?

    • Vinay

Hows about you wire me the cash now and I'll send you the tablet when I get it....

      • jeremee

        LOL! nice
(hey it's no different to the way NI have done it, so good call Vinay).

        • screenname

except notion ink has credentials and you've seen them and it through certified companies and not some screen name and an ip...

  • Myria

    ...And so it begins.

  • Objective

What part of words like "pre-order" and "estimated ship date" do people like Vinay not understand?

This level of intolerance/ignorance is unjustified.

Even Android Police attributes this to red tape.

    • Vinay

Ah so I'm ignorant because I had the temerity to take notion ink at it's word. How's about they delay the pre-order till the minor details are ironed out. There's a limit to being a fanboi. I'm close to it cause I dumped $600 (yes pixel qi+3G) without even seeing a product. I may be impatient but rabid fanbois are truly ignorant

      • Tim Elston

As I recall, Notion Ink's word was that the shipping dates were estimates, subject to change.

        • Vinay

And you are correct sir. But I hoped that a new startup like NI would make sure that they lived up to those dates and gain credibility instead of falling back on the asterisks. I like the product I like the idea and I haven't canceled. But i worry about NI's credibility and aftersales support considering all of thse snafu's

  • ben

AndroidPolice should tell how many comments came from same IP ;-)

  • JT

Some are for sale at the notion ink forum...

  • froyo

this is a designed delay. take preorder then use the cash to manufacturing the stuff. they don't have to invest their own money. if the product becomes a hit, great they just made a fortune, if not. you all screwed.

    • hafdolla

Good thing my card hasn't been charged to date then :-)

  • android boi

can we circlejerk notion ink Adam anymore. why don't you idiots just fly to banglore get the address of where the Adams are kept in china. go to china pick up your piece of sh$$t tablet, and fly back on a plane with wifi so you can circlejerk your fanatics peers and ofc include Rohan in it as well. don't forget to make love to yours Adams but I am sure you NI fanboys have cardboard printouts of the Adam as well as some vaseline while in bed.
While the hot girl next-door is shagging the guy with the ipad or xoom tablet.

    • KillJoy

My best guess about android boi:

Obese male in his late 30s.
      Divorced (or never married)
      Living with parents.
His only hope in life: the janitor who says howdy.

    • SiliconAddict

Much hate I sense in you.

  • Peter

    @ Vinay,

Don't loose any more sleep, sell your Adam pre-order on ebay as a few already did. You are guaranteed a good return on your investment. The last seller got $900 for a $550 investment, not bad, don't you think so?

    • Vinay

Yhea, your right, my card got charged so i'm just getting antsy. I'll actually hold out till have the device before i resell it. if i feel like reselling it.

  • Brandon Barrett

Let inform some of u people... NI should really know better, this fcc crap is B.S. I personally wrk for a company who deals with them first hand. And once u are officially certified, they give u the go ahead, they give u the number and patent B.S. this is just them trying to by time, honestly I have looked at it my self personally and of there is a hold up its because of there country and there by laws or something with China

On another note, there certification is private so it could have something to do with that... I ordered a tablet and I am in the. Jan 15 date , so I hope it ships then,

    • screenname

they said they have it, that there is a delay is putting the number on the actual hardware (because it illegal to sell a device that dosnt have it on the back) assume andriod police have the right info

  • Anurag

Notion Ink’s Adam is expected to be launched sometime in June 2011.

It is according to the source:

  • Joe

@Anurag: You expect "windowsclub" to tell the truth about NI ?

  • SiliconAddict

hmmm name me another company who has had FCC holdups on their hardware in the last 5 years. No seriously. I want to know. This is the first time I've heard of such a thing.

  • alexandros

archos had one tablet stopped at fcc some months ago, i can't remember what product it was but archos never really seemed to care about that product.
It was an inferior product to their new line of archos gen 8.
They never advertised it or anything.
But this delay os somewhat suspicious

  • Bruno Alex

Im one of the first preorder persons and i havnt received anything ?! 0_o

    • screenname

you need to ask them and they send the standard email.

  • Tom

    Dear XXXX,
Greetings from the Notion Ink Support Team!

Our system indicate that your device would be shipped to you between the January 15 to January 22 slot. We do not have specific date when the Adam would be shipped to you. Also, we should be able to provide you with the tracking number and concerned carrier once we have this information. We will be happy to assist you further if you have any other queries.

Thank you for your continued support to Notion Ink!

    Warm Regards
    Notion Ink Support Team

Just as an FYI regarding FCC ......

With Christmas & the New Year holidays, of course things will be delayed.

For example, I've just checked out a Sony (you know that large well known Japanese company) laptop and that took 3 weeks to be approved on the FCC site (submitted 16th December according to the Confidentiality letter, approved 6th January).

So give NI a break. If someone like Sony (who obviously submit things all the time) have a 3 week period, then someone who may not get all the paperwork right first time will obviously take longer!

  • Someone

I say it's another tablet maker who's rumoured to be releasing a tablet in February -- breaking in their 1 year / 1 product cycle due to fear that they will get smashed into tiny bits.

They're paying a truckload of money to "delay" the numbers. I mean, how much time do you need to send over numbers for an already approved device? You know that first-to-market is always important, so I can see them doing this.

  • Anurag

According to this, Notion Ink has never submit application to the FCC:

    • screenname

you can make it private... which rohan said he did after everyone was blogging about what code it was saying on the site.
