Gameloft, the game publisher with arguably the most advanced Android games, which you, unfortunately, won't find in the Market (I guess they really hate giving Google the 30% fee), announced its latest daily Christmas promotion. On the 22nd day of December, Gameloft is giving away Hero Of Sparta, an RPG with awesome 3D graphics, for absolutely free.

The game's dedicated page lists it at $4.99, but this special url offers the freebie in exchange for your phone number, which Gameloft promises to use exclusively for sending the download link.

While all countries are supported, not all phone models are. Fortunately, Gameloft provides this list of compatible hardware:

  • HTC Google Nexus One
  • HTC Desire/Bravo
  • HTC Incredible
  • HTC EVO 4G
  • HTC Desire Z
  • HTC desire HD
  • HTC My touch 4G
  • Motorola Droid
  • Motorola Droid X
  • Motorola Droid 2
  • Motorola Milestone
  • Motorola Motoroi
  • Motorola Milestone 2
  • Motorola Jordan
  • Samsung Galaxy S
  • Samsung Vibrant
  • Samsung Epic 4G
  • Samsung Fascinate
  • Sony Ericsson Xperia X10

I found it funny that when I read their blog post an hour ago, the game was rated 6/10, and now, only 15-20 votes or so later, it's rated 9/10. Tweaking ratings much, Gameloft?

Nevertheless, a free game is a free game. Download away.

Update: I had to jump through a few hoops, and the whole download experience left a nasty aftertaste in my mouth - the download is initiated from a webpage linked in an SMS message, except what it downloads is a 22KB "100% Free Games" app, which just opens the same page when started. This confused and annoyed me greatly. However, when I clicked "Download" on that page, the 2.25MB game APK started, and I was finally able to install the game. WTF, Gameloft?

The game started fine on my EVO 4G and required another 66MB of data to be downloaded (I recommend you enable Wi-Fi before starting it). After playing it for a while, I was pretty impressed. Once you manage to actually install Gameloft games, they're quite amazing.

The link that was SMS'd to me took me to a page where I was asked to pay for the game. Not very nice! Can I have my phone number back now?

:( Guys, whoever is having problems - try tweeting @gameloft and asking wtf is going on - they should be able to help.

Their tech department is seriously challenged but the games are pretty damn good. It's a shame really.

  • sjpm

After harvesting my phone number, I got sent a link to a page saying "sorry no available games for your mobile."

Well then why do you list my phone as compatible?

Once again putting Gameloft on my list of "scummy companies I won't deal with".

  • Mike357

I had no problem getting the game...it's not the first game I've gotten from them, so that might be a factor.

    • sjpm

Mike out of curiosity, what link did they send you if you don't mind?

  • sdny8

3 download attempts. 3 force closes. Perfect

    • Kane

Force closes in what app exactly?

  • Curtis

I left my number and never got a text! Awesome

  • RockEvo

I was able to download it, it took 2 attempts the first attempt it downloaded something called 100% free HD games, but I notice if you just click on free download instead of clicking on the game to bring up the description it worked with no problems. Also it didn't ask for my phone number not sure if it’s because I downloaded from the website before.

  • jasen

I downloaded their free thing and then when i went back the game was gone! Gave my email and phone number. This makes me frustrated.

Worked like a charm after using the 100% HD games shortcut, no problemo. Thanks for the link!

  • Steve

Wtf...I select my phone from the list (Droid X), and then it changes the game selection to Asphalt 5. :/

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Yeah, same thing happened to me - poor Javascript on their part. Just select Hero of Sparta from the list again after you do that, and you should be fine.

      • Steve

Yeah, thanks, it's downloading now...I actually selected it from the list of games at the bottom of the page, it said Free there also.

  • sjpm

OK if you are having issues, make sure your user agent isn't set to some desktop string.

That fixed it for me... even though after that the dl was still strange and way more complex than it needed to be.

  • btam

Stuck in this never ending loop. Used the link in the sms took me to a page with "limited offer: 1 free game" hero of sparta click get it now, takes me to another page that says free download. click that and it takes me back to the previous page. this is driving me crazy

  • Ready

Accessed this link from my N1. First downloaded the 100% Free Games then downloaded the game free. Seemed pretty simple. Game is pretty impressive.

  • froyo

no you don't get my phone number.

  • Steve

Ok, this is annoying...the game isn't even RUNNING (I hit Done after installing it, not Run, so I never started it at all yet), and I've seen probably at least a half dozen force closes from it already.

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

I'm seeing constant FCs when the app isn't running and I haven't had data reception for a while (after a tunnel). Uninstalling as well, this is too frustrating.

  • darus77

I am seeing repeated FCs as well, even on a freshly battery-pull-rebooted phone. Why is this game even loading into memory on its own? It looks like a fantastic game, but I am not liking this behavior at all. Uninstalling it, and not dealing with gameloft again until they make their games available on the Market.

Yeah, there are a few hoops to jump through, but I kept focus on getting Hero, and I didn't have too much trouble getting it on my Evo. Got the sms with the link, DL'd the "100% free games," clicked Hero, got the game. Getting the 66mb update right now. Thanks for the (continuing) heads-up, Artem.

  • Jack

able to dl it no problem...however, the game was absolutely terrible and i uninstalled it within minutes.
