SoC

A few days ago, a new version of Universal Androot was released with support for Froyo, but a number of devices were still incompatible. Enter SuperOneClick - a new root method released yesterday by XDA-Devs forum member CLShortFuse. Being just a day after release, it's too early to tell what devices SOC does/does not work on, but Fuse says it works "with almost all [Android] phones and all [A]ndroid versions. (including the i9000, Droid, Nexus One)." You can also allow non-market apps on devices that were previously locked down (i.e. the HTC Aria).

Rooting using SOC is just like other versions of one-click or simple roots: download the zip, open the .exe, and follow the instructions. Based on user comments, it looks to be a fairly simple process.

SoC

"I'm confused... which button do I click?"

Thus far, SuperOneClick only works on Windows, but Fuse is planning on porting it to Mac/Linux in the future. Also missing: an "Unroot" button - but that's also planned for an upcoming release. He created and tested SOC himself, so if you use it and have some spare dough laying around, consider sending a few bucks his way.

Be sure to sound off in the comments and let us know your experience (don't forget to include your device!) so that other readers know what to expect.

So far, besides the Captivate, we've been able to confirm this working on the Droid running 2.2, the Nexus One running 2.2.1 (FRG83), and Sprint HTC Hero running the latest update. ShortFuse has started a Root Incompatibility List - thus far the only phone on it is the EVO.

Update: Download link updated to newer version (from 1.3 to 1.4).

Anyone know if we will get prompted to update the software when the unroot button update comes out? I like to plan ahead....

    • G1hill29

Hey, does this support apps 2 sd on the N1? I'm running outta internal space...Also, Anyone know if we will get prompted to update the software when the unroot button update comes out? I like to plan ahead....

Anyone know how it works on EVO?

    • Aaron Gingrich

      Doesn't, sorry. Try unrevoked.

  • Don

So is this not working with HTC phones? Specifically Evo 4g.

    • Aaron Gingrich

      Sorry, it doesn't. Try unrevoked.

  • aj

Here's what popped up in the root window for me. For some reason it isn't working for me on my Evo. It says 'out of memory' but I have over 100 megs free internally on the device. I'm not sure what the error 'out of memory' means and how to fix it. Any ideas?:

    Running rageagainstthecage...
    ROOTED

    Getting mount path...
    /dev/block/mtdblock4
    OK

    Remounting system with read-write access...

    OK

    Pushing su...
failed to copy 'su' to '/system/bin/su': Out of memory

    OK

    Pushing superuser.apk...
failed to copy 'superuser.apk' to '/system/app/superuser.apk': Out of memory

    OK

    chmod su...
Unable to chmod /system/bin/su: No such file or director

I'm guessing it's because your EVO has the /system partition locked (NAND lock). You should go with unrevoked instead - it unlocks NAND as well.

      • aj

yeah, I just went with unrevoked. worked like a charm.

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

As the post says, you need Windows to run this.

  • mike

Anyone try it on my touch slide??

    • Aaron Gingrich

Not that I know of, but I would guess it would work.

  • Omar

Does it work with the G2?

    • Aaron Gingrich

I'm not sure, only one way to find out :)

Even if it does, it would only be temporary anyway. There's no permaroot out yet.

Does anyone know how to ROOT the Samsung Showcase??

  • tyrone

Hey, I have the Lg Ally. I rooted it using androot.apk. Recently I received a firmware update 2.1 update 1. This blocked something on my phone. All my apps that require "root" don't work; saying I need su permissions. However when I try to reroot my phone, it says that my phone is already rooted. I'ved searched for a patch or a fix to this, but I'm not that familiar to what I'm doing..... Please help.

Samsung Galaxy Indulge (MetroPCS) SCHr910 2.2.1

The process goes through all the way (After downloading the drivers, it passed "waiting for device")
It says it sent a SU command at the very end but I see no such command. Superuser icon isn't on my phone aswell. I've restarted the phone to see if it shows up to no avail. Open Root Explorer but it fails to give me SU permissions=[
What else can i look for or do?
