Good news on the Droid 2 modding front: the first custom ROM for said phone has been released. As this is the first ROM out for the device - and it's fairly soon after release - there's not a ton of customization. Still, any improvement is better than none at all, right?

The ROM (Epic Unleashed 1.0) is the work of Matt4542, and requires root and koush's recovery. It retains a feel pretty close to stock:

Things in the rom:
Removed bloatware(Stupid Verizon!)
Added scripts
Many build.prop mods

Still has Motoblur, just took my system folder and edited it like ****. This is the first booted build so please report bugs as you find them to my GTalk matt4542@gmail.com

The known bug is that the backlight wont turn off when you locked the device, the screen is on but black. Please do not report this bug I will fix it in the next release.

This has the DROID 1 boot animation for a "retro" feel lol.

Installation seems to be fairly straightforward:

To install need root and koush's bootstrap app. You will need to make a FULL nandroid backup before doing this because if you **** your system you can restore. After that go into install zip and toggle the zip authentication check off(or whatever it is) because I wanted this release out so quick I didn't sign the package. DO NOT INSTALL VIA ROM MANAGER!

Very cool. If you take the dive and flash this ROM, be sure to let us know what you think.

Why do people bother with these releases? He wanted to get it out quick so he didn't sign it? That would take like 5 minutes max?

  • None

Perhaps it leaves people with a sigh of relief that the bootloader is not as locked down as Motorola lets us think, and that we can build our own kernels for it. Otherwise it could have dissuades people, like myself, from buying the Droid 2.
