Acer And Motorola Waiting For Gingerbread To Release Android Tablets

If you can’t wait any longer for a quality Android tablet, this may come as a bit of bad news. Both Acer and Motorola are planning to delay the release of their respective Android tablets until the release of Android 3.0, which is expected to feature support for higher-resolution screens.

Acer’s tablet may be pushed back until the first quarter of 2011, which could put a damper on previous rumors that Gingerbread would be released some time before the end of the year. Motorola’s tablet, on the other hand, may see Gingerbread much earlier, as Google is working directly with Motorola to get Android 3.0 working on their 10.1” device (which could be the rumored “Stingray” tablet headed to Verizon).

EVO Owners Benchmark 10 Custom ROMs, 1 Stock ROM

This has got to be one of the most useful things I’ve seen in my tenure here, although I may be biased because I own an EVO. XDA forum member nief1313 is in the (very slow) process of compiling the results of testing and benchmarking a ton of EVO ROMs. When I say a ton, I mean 11:

Video Killed The Radio Star: RIAA And NAB Seek To Force FM Radio On All Cellular Phones

As it becomes painfully obvious to the RIAA that suing individuals for music copyright infringement is about as fiscally logical as burning hundred-dollar bills to melt down pennies for copper, the now-infamous media group is seeking to generate revenue from more traditional avenues.

Both the RIAA and NAB (National Association of Broadcasters), who are often fierce opponents, are demanding US Congress pass a bill mandating the presence of FM radio receivers in all cellular phones. Why? The Benjamins, of course.

It's no secret that both radio broadcasters and record labels are losing revenue to digital distribution of music - legal and otherwise.

Koush Releases Custom ClockworkMod Recovery For Motorola Droid X - Nandroid Backups And Restores Now Possible; Next Stop: Custom ROMs

This article mentions rooting, Nandroid, and flashing of custom ROMs. If you’re unfamiliar with some of the terms, hit up our primers on rooting, custom ROMs, and Nandroid backups.

The Droid X, Motorola's and Verizon's current flagship handset, has been rooted earlier this month (method 1, method 2), and today Koushik Dutta, the author of ClockworkMod recovery and the lead developer behind CM6 for Droid, released the first working recovery for this beast.

This means that users can now easily back up and restore their handsets using Nandroid backup, whether to get back to a certain state in the past or to roll back to a good state due to accidental "bricking" - a situation which is common for those treading in the undocumented territory that is the Droid X internals.

Deal Alert: T-Mobile Samsung Vibrant Free (OK, Fine - $0.01) On Amazon.com For New Customers

Earlier today, T-Mobile ran a "huge" promotion, lowering the price of the Samsung Vibrant to $99.99 in an exclusive online deal. Since Amazon.com, Wirefly.com, and others have had the $99.99 price tag for ages now, we didn't give T-Mobile's deal much coverage (well, any coverage really). Many other sites did, however.

Seeing this, Amazon.com had a quick huddle this afternoon and came back with an even better offer of just $0.01 for new activations. That's 1 penny short of being absolutely free.

Sadly, upgrades are still $149.99 but those of you looking for that extra kick in the butt to switch over to T-Mo may have just run into the right boot.

Still No Official Date For Droid Incredible 2.2 Update, Despite Rumors

Remember that pesky rumor sparked up by Mashable a while back, claiming that the Incredible would be receiving the Froyo OTA update right about now? Well, if you are still clutching your phone and frantically checking for system updates as the day 08/18 draws to a close … you can take a rain check on that system update. Tweeted out earlier by the Verizon Wireless support account @VZWsupport, there is no confirmed date for the Froyo release and it will not be happening today. Sorry guys.

Motorola Charm Coming To T-Mobile August 25th For $75

Are you in the market for a strikingly rectangular low-end messaging phone running Android 2.1 and Motoblur? Come on, you know you want one!

If so, the Motorola Charm - you know, that squat little Motorola messaging phone for T-Mobile with a 2.8 inch screen and a non-slide out physical QWERTY keyboard right below it - is now officially hitting T-Mobile on August 25 for what T-Mobile USA has said on Facebook to be an "affordable" $74.99, despite the rumors that it would be free on a new two-year contract.

Dell Streak Torn Apart By iFixit - Reveals It Has Chips, Circuits

iFixit is at it again - this time, they’ve torn down a Dell Streak. As usual, they’ve provided a ton of pictures and a step-by-step to go with it. Just a quick rehash of the specs:

  • 5” 800x480 display
  • 5 MP camera around back, VGA camera on front
  • Android 1.6 (Donut)
  • 1 GHz Snapdragon CPU
  • Gorilla Glass-protected screen

The 15-step teardown (complete with pictures for every step) reveals a whole slew of additional details, and could prove very useful if you ever need to repair the device yourself. iFixit gives the Streak an 8 out of 10 for repairability, citing the following reasons:

  • Good: Replacing the battery is super easy and takes less than one minute.

Verizon Bringing Video-On-Demand To Smartphones, Adding Some Cloud Storage

Verizon announced that they’d be releasing an app for a variety of devices that adds functionality for FiOS customers. For example, iPad users can watch TV on the device as long as they’re at home. More relevantly to our purposes, though: they’ll be releasing an app to allow some smartphone users to stream video-on-demand.

There is a catch-22 though: the app only supports select smartphones - namely, those sold by Verizon. While this isn’t stated explicitly (that I can see), the list of supported devices makes it pretty obvious: Droid X, Droid 2, WinMo 6.5, and the BlackBerry Storm. Even better, it seems that any movies purchased or rented can then be viewed on any available device - no limitations to just one device.

G2, T-Mobile's First HSPA+ Device, Gets A Website To Call Its Own

It seems appropriate since the G1, the phone that kicked off the Android revolution, was killed off a few weeks ago, and since T-Mobile is about to introduce their first HSPA+ capable device, that they would call this device the G2. Well, after countless rumors about a G2 (starting a few hours after the G1's launch), the device has finally been announced on T-Mobile's HSPA+ site.

That's right, the G2 is official, will be the first phone to utilize T-Mobile's 4G-like HSPA+ network, and will have its specs handed out to the media and a select group of people "over the coming weeks." These are exciting times ahead of us, folks, so stay tuned to Android Police for lots more coverage on the G2 and other upcoming Android devices.
