Quoth The Counting Crows – “Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you got till it’s gone?”

Yes indeedy. It appears that Android developers were so forcefully reminded of the Nexus One’s greatness by its removal from Google’s public web store that they have cleared the entire remaining stock in a few short weeks.

According to Google's Android developer advocate, Tim Bray, the phone is back-ordered with HTC and they are working their hardest to get the N1 back in stock. It's nice to see that the openness of the Nexus One with its unfettered vanilla ...

Ok, so this is technically “so last month” too - it’s from July 30, and we just happened to miss it the first time around. Luckily for us, good ole’ ChiefzReloaded tweeted (or retweeted?) some pictures of CM6 running on the HD2. After doing a little poking around, I found that there’s a pretty solid build out there - it’s even CM6 RC1. As a result, nearly everything works on the device: GPS, camera (with flash), torch (for the camera LED), Adobe Flash, and so on. Nice.

Let's face it: browsing the Android Market on your desktop currently sucks. For one thing, there aren't any categories - just "Top Free" and "Top Paid." For another, there's no search!

On your phone, the situation isn't much better - you can search, which is good if you know what you're looking for in advance but you still can't filter those results. And discovering new apps is just downright horrible.

This is where sites like AppBrain come in. They spider the Android Market, slice and dice it, and provide better ways of finding your next favorite app.

Just like the title says: some real, live shots of the T-Mobile G2 out in the real world have landed in Engadget’s lap. Based on the photos, it looks like the earlier leaked renders were pretty accurate, albeit the colors were off. It’s not a bad looking piece of kit, though it is does look a bit utilitarian. In fact, it looks like what I’d imagine the Nexus Two to look like.

It’ll be sporting a 3.7” screen and a full four-row slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Unlike the G1, the entire body of the G2 slides up rather than just ...

MyDroidWorld has scored a big one today: they’ve hosted the Droid X Froyo ROM, thanks to the hard work of P3Droid, Birdman, and rootzwiki. Installation seems relatively simple, and boy is it a popular download: their server was bombarded with 15,000 download requests shortly after posting it.

Installation seems rather simple, assuming you're rooted and are running stock recovery:

They’ve hosted the file with MediaFire since it seems to have crashed their servers.

Unfortunately, we don’t really have any details at this point since this just happened, but we’ll update as needed. If anyone takes the jump, be sure ...

This morning on Vodafone’s forums, a VF employee announced that the Froyo update for the HTC Desire would be rolling out on Monday. We knew it was coming soon - on August 12, we relayed that they expected it to roll out in 7-10 days - sans crapware. The update is rolling out a bit later than expected (August 23 would be 11 days) because they wanted to make sure they’d worked out all the kinks. Vodafone is hoping to roll out the update to all customers within a two-week timeframe.

In what seems to be an attempt to appease ...

If you’re a rooted user, you’re probably familiar with the ADB command, and that it requires you to connect your phone to your PC with a cable. Enter adbWireles, which allows you to - wait for it - use ADB over WiFi.

The specifics of how it works are pretty technical, but here’s the laymans version provided by the dev (and translated from Spanish by the Goog):

adbWireless is a simple application to enable the wireless interface debug Android. After enabling the connection works as if we had the phone connected via USB. If you do not know which

A new live wallpaper (LWP) app has been released on the Market. LWPs may be a dime a dozen, but this one is definitely worth a look:

From what I can tell, there is no actual relation to NVIDIA/Ageia's PhysX engine, other than a focus on physics (who would’ve guessed?). The effect is quite cool though - the particles move based on how you’re holding the phone, and can be set to act in various manners. Very nifty.

There are a variety of color combinations available (“Deep Blue” is below), and you can opt to change how the particles ...

You bought an Android phone because you’re into cool functionality, right? Don’t attempt to deny it, something that creates a database of your books, CDs, DVDs and video games is exactly the kind of thing you like.

Here we have Shelves. Putting to use your phone’s camera, Shelves scans the barcodes of your collections and automagically creates a virtual representation of them on your phone, for cataloguing, loaning, or just admiring.

Trillian-for-Android

Cerulean Studios, maker of the popular chat client Trillian, has released the first public beta build of Trillian for Android. For the uninitiated: Trillian lets you connect to multiple IM and social networks at the same time, allowing you to manage contacts and real-time status feeds efficiently. And when we say “multiple,” we mean pretty much all of them:

  • Windows Live
  • Yahoo
  • Facebook Chat
  • AIM
  • GTalk
  • ICQ
  • MySpace IM
  • Jabber
  • Astra Account

Trillian already has mobile clients for Blackberry and the iPhone, and finally Android is joining the fray. The program/app is free (although there’s a paid “Pro” version ...

If you can’t wait any longer for a quality Android tablet, this may come as a bit of bad news. Both Acer and Motorola are planning to delay the release of their respective Android tablets until the release of Android 3.0, which is expected to feature support for higher-resolution screens.

Acer’s tablet may be pushed back until the first quarter of 2011, which could put a damper on previous rumors that Gingerbread would be released some time before the end of the year. Motorola’s tablet, on the other hand, may see Gingerbread much earlier, as Google is working directly with ...

This has got to be one of the most useful things I’ve seen in my tenure here, although I may be biased because I own an EVO. XDA forum member nief1313 is in the (very slow) process of compiling the results of testing and benchmarking a ton of EVO ROMs. When I say a ton, I mean 11:

  1. Stock Froyo
  2. CyanogenMod 6 RC2
  3. DamageControl 3.5
  4. Fresh EVO 3.1.0.1
  5. BakedSnack 1.2.5
  6. Burnt Droid 1.0
  7. EViO 2 Series v1.0.2
  8. EViO 2 Series v1.1
  9. Ava-FroyoV3RevA
  10. OMJ’s v2.1
  11. FroYo Fusion 2.3

Quite the comprehensive list, and a popular one at that: as I write ...

As it becomes painfully obvious to the RIAA that suing individuals for music copyright infringement is about as fiscally logical as burning hundred-dollar bills to melt down pennies for copper, the now-infamous media group is seeking to generate revenue from more traditional avenues.

Both the RIAA and NAB (National Association of Broadcasters), who are often fierce opponents, are demanding US Congress pass a bill mandating the presence of FM radio receivers in all cellular phones. Why? The Benjamins, of course.

It's no secret that both radio broadcasters and record labels are losing revenue to digital distribution of music - legal ...

This article mentions rooting, Nandroid, and flashing of custom ROMs. If you’re unfamiliar with some of the terms, hit up our primers on rooting, custom ROMs, and Nandroid backups.

The Droid X, Motorola's and Verizon's current flagship handset, has been rooted earlier this month (method 1, method 2), and today Koushik Dutta, the author of ClockworkMod recovery and the lead developer behind CM6 for Droid, released the first working recovery for this beast.

This means that users can now easily back up and restore their handsets using Nandroid backup, whether to get back ...

Earlier today, T-Mobile ran a "huge" promotion, lowering the price of the Samsung Vibrant to $99.99 in an exclusive online deal. Since Amazon.com, Wirefly.com, and others have had the $99.99 price tag for ages now, we didn't give T-Mobile's deal much coverage (well, any coverage really). Many other sites did, however.

Seeing this, Amazon.com had a quick huddle this afternoon and came back with an even better offer of just $0.01 for new activations. That's 1 penny short of being absolutely free.

Sadly, upgrades are still $149.99 but those of you looking for that extra kick in the ...
