Get Adobe Flash player

What a great day for Motorola Droid owners - your Froyo update that you've been patiently waiting for is finally here. You can upgrade your ESE81 (that's your old Éclair) to what is now called FRG01B (this is your Froyo) using the link below.

It is unclear yet whether the upgrade is showing up when you ask the phone to update in Settings > About > System updates but we have preliminary reports that it is not. However, you can upgrade manually using the procedure below.

This post will be updated throughout the day.

Warning #1: Applying this update will unroot you if you are currently rooted, pending further notice.

Warning #2: This update will only work on Droids running a stock version of Android 2.1. If you are rooted or running a custom ROM, this update will not work.

Download:

Instructions

  1. Download the update file and rename it to update.zip.
Note #1: DO NOT UNZIP THIS FILE
Note #2: Make sure you didn't rename this to update.zip.zip by accident, if your Windows is configured to not show file extensions.
  2. Place in the root of your SD card (connect via USB and mount as a drive, transfer via Bluetooth, download directly on the phone by clicking the links above or scanning the QR codes - pick your poison).
  3. Reboot into recovery mode (power off, then hold the keyboard X button and press the power button).
  4. You will be presented with the recovery menu.
Note: you may see an exclamation (!) point at this stage. Hold the Volume Up button, then press the Camera button - this should load the recovery screen.
  5. Select “apply update.zip” or “install from .zip” (depending on your recovery image).
  6. The installation process will take 10-15 minutes and one reboot.
  7. Enjoy!

Update #1: Here are some screenshots from our Droid:

IMAG0032 IMAG0033[4]

 IMAG0036 IMAG0037[6]

What's New?

  • if you hold Home, now the Recently Used program list contains 8 programs instead of 6 and is no longer boxed in
  • 5 homescreens instead of 3
  • USB tethering is here
  • Froyo WiFi tethering is not
  • auto-rotation now rotates both clockwise and counter-clockwise
  • Flash is not enabled or even present from what I can tell. It is also not available in the Market. Update: you can download and install Flash manually from here
  • the app launcher now has faded and darkened top and bottom edges
  • changed SMS app
  • changed Alarm app
  • the dock mode Home button flow is fixed - now hitting Home when the phone is docked goes back to the dock home rather than the home screen
  • the dock mode now has a screensaver
  • anything else we're missing? Note it down in the comments

  • Let us know your progress, folks!

Does anyone see the OTA when checking for updates?

    • Well I downloaded the zip file and the first time it did not work, since in trying to save it to the card I accidently opened it. I then downloaded the zip file again to my computer and transferred it to the droid. I deleted the prior update.zip file. And, ... viola, it worked. I now have FROYO... thanks. It took a while for my applications to load and e-mail accounts to update. It seems faster. A lot faster. I am not sure still how to get flash. I went on a flash site and tried to download from the adobe mobile link and it didn't work. I will try the marketplace. Any help???

      Suggestions?
By the way, my purchased wifi tether still works via USB and Bluetooth. Don't know what all the fuss is about. It only costs $16

      Thanks

      • Adobe flash 10.1 is available free on the market. To find it simply search "flash player."

        • I've upgraded the firmware to 2.2 on my Motorola Droid. I found Adobe Showcase in the market when I searched for Flash Player 10.1. Once downloaded, it said I could download 10.1. I clicked the link and a message "item could not be found" popped up. Any insight?

        • Yeah, Alan's information was not accurate, at least for most people.

Please see the note about how to get Flash in the post.

    • I want to do this update so I don't have to wait, how do I know this is the exact same update I would get OTA from Verizon?

      • Couldn't wait for an answer. Rockin' 2.2 - everything went very smooth following install instructions. Thanks!

    • Download installed it with no problem but it has a horrible lag its really slow its more like a downgrade from 2.1 than an upgrade I don't know if something is wrong with it but it is horrible

      • This is ridiculous I don't understand why my Droid is soooooo much slower and glitchier

  • Did not see it when I went to check for updates. currently processing the file manually on my phone now.

  • Downloading now. Anyone have any horror stories before I pull the trigger?

  • I've been checking all day and I'm yet to see the OTA

  • finished! it successfully updated and i am now on FROYO! awesome.

  • Cant believe i'm having trouble doing this, cant get pass step 4

    • I had a little difficulty as well... I had to really hold down volume up and then mash camera for a second or two.

      • why does it keep telling me installation aborted?

        • Try re-downloading the file. DO NOT UNZIP IT. Manually copy it from your pc to the phone using your usb cable and try again. Probably corrupted download.

  • Pressing X and Power does not seem to display any kind of Recovery menu, as listed in step 3 above. Please advise on the EXACT steps. Thanks in advance.

  • Can somebody say me if this will work on the "Milestone".

Its the Droid just Europe Version. I got the German one.

    Maybe its possible?

    • I'm pretty sure this one is tailored for Verizon... it probably will work but I personally wouldn't risk it.

    • Cícero Lourenço says:

      Will not work on Milestone.

Milestone is not just a Europe Version of Droid. It's a GSM version. In tecnichal terms its a complete diferent phone. Very things change um bootloader, modem and other things in hardware.

  • Instructions worked a charm.

FYI: Before I did it manually, I tried twice, the 2nd time after a reboot and plugging the phone into a charger, to see if there were updates; I got nothing.

So, manual update. Think I only went through one reboot, but I did get up and walk away. Came back to a phone with Froyo!

Seems faster, although it's hard to tell. Sync icon won't turn off. Browser is definitely faster on sites I visit, and I think a good ad-blocker would help with the other issues.

On another reboot: Shutdown and startup def. faster. Reboot also fixed sync icon issue.

  • The only issue i have encountered so far is that some of my default sounds for various apps has changed. Going Through manually to change them back to what they were before.

Also after the reboot my phone was extremely slow to start but once it did it seemed very smooth and nice.. honestly don't know how i will fill 5 home screens.. i was so used to 3

  • Worked like a charm. Thank you much!

  • Well, got Froyo, but went to the market and cannot find flash. Anybody know whats up?

  • do you need to be rooted or something? cause i following directions exactly and i get nothing

    • The easiest way is to save the file to your PC, connect your phone and enable the USB transfers. Then, if it doesn't open automatically, open the highest letter in My Computer (mine was G). Copy the file to this new drive.

Follow steps 3-7 and you should be good to go. You have to HOLD Power AND X at the same time to do the rest.

  • I followed the steps, had no trouble. was quicker than i thought. now i feel like i got excited, for just a little. differences i've noticed:
    camera - better i think

app drawer, call button & browser on
home screen - this annoys me. PLEASE
how do you turn it off?!

tethering - (haha) i just read this wasn't going to be added, yet it's here, but have to "subscribe" via carrier

    more home screens - yay

seems to look a little better

    seems a bit faster

    What have I missed?!

  • RE: Flash for Droid Froyo

I have it working. And no, it doesn't come with the package, nor does it appear to be in the Market.

To do it, I followed some comments over at the Gizmodo post on Froyo for Droid, and got the APK package from Droidlife.

Do a standard install for non-Market apps (make sure the "Unknown sources" option is Checked in Settings->Applications), and then use the Browser to go to a Flash-enabled site, and click on a Flash object to test. I tried a couple of videos, and it's slow, but usable, and didn't crash.

It's not going to replace the YouTube app for us, it seems, but it works on basic video stuff, at least.

  • What do you mean no Flash? If this is the real Froyo then we've all been told it runs Flash 10.1.

  • Worked great! Much faster after second reboot...

  • Download worked no problems. The only issue I am having is getting flash to work. I downloaded flash showcase from the market but when I launch app it says Cabot find file. Any suggestions.

    Thanks

  • i tried downloading to phone, went through the steps keeps telling me its been aborted, kind find file. so i tried to do it on the coumputer but am not sure how to put it in the root of sd card. please help. thank you

    • says failed to open /sdcard/update.zip (no such file or directory signature verification failed installation aborted.

      • That means you didn't copy it into the root SD card folder. That's the very topmost folder when you mount the phone as disk mode in your PC.

      • Open the device like you would any other external hard drive or usb thumb drive. The first thing that opens is the place to put it.

        • it is an app folder for a music player? put it there

        • No. When you go to My Computer, you will see a drive letter associated with your phone. Save it directly to the drive letter (in my case, "G"), not inside any sub folders withing the drive letter. IE NOT in G:\music, only in G:\.

        • thanks i thought i did that but didnt. everything went perfect. thanks guys!!!

  • Awww....my droid doesn't announce itself anymore on startup or shutdown! Noooooooo!!!!

  • i'm running unrooted 2.1 and when i place it on the root of my sd card and go to install update.zip it goes through then when it gets to verifying current system it pauses for a few seconds then says assert faile and error in update.zip, installation aborted. i've never had a problem like this before installing an update

  • Installed and working...including flash. You have to manually download the flash app and enable the install unknown app setting. I found the easiest way was to transfer to the card via the usb cable to the downloads folder, and run it from the phone. I have a file manager that made it easy to find and run. It will install like any other app.

I personally disabled the unknown sources option once I was done.

  • Tried downloading from several different places, but keep getting the same message:

"Cannot download. The content is not supported on this phone"

WTF? Is this because I have Verizon and they want me to only use their update? Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated!!!!

    • Best idea is to download it to a PC, connect it to your PC with the USB cabel and enable file transfers when prompted. Then save it directly to the root drive representing the phone. In my case it was G:\. Don't save it in any sub folders inside the drive, just directly on the drive. Then follow steps 3-7.

You have to get a file downloader app and it gets kinda tricky if you want to download it directly on the phone. I did it, but then again I am a PC technician :p

      • Thanks so much! Your help is very greatly appreciated! I ended up having to download it on to my computer and then transfering over to the phone. Once I got the update to the correct spot, it was a piece of cake! Thank you again!

        • Your welcome. That seems to be the easiest way to do it.

        • It seems like it's just me at this point, but does it seem that once updated, things run slower and choppier and battery life gets drained super fast? I haven't changed any programs or anything that would cause this kind of change other than the update. Any one have any ideas? Maybe redownload and reinstall again?

        • Start removing apps until it clears up. Last person I recommended it to worked... perhaps a home screen app? For at least one other person it was an app slowing it down.

          Good luck.

  • Install seems to be working fine now. If you get the error stating install aborted, just try naming it update, since your computer probably automatically lists the .zip on its own. Thanks a ton!

  • it says cannot read footer and also says it is a directory?????? this is at the screen where it says instsll sd/update.zip

    • Sounds like you unzipped the file. You need to download the file, rename it update.zip, and copy it back to the phone (I did it with the USB cable). Do not open/unzip/extract the file at all. Just copy the downloaded and renamed file to the phone.

  • Great instructions worked perfect

  • is there a root out for this yet?

  • help... it says failed to open/sdcard/update.zip...signature verification failed installation aborted

    • Try re-downloading the file, renaming it to update.zip (if you just see the filename but no .zip, just rename it to update), and then copying it back to the phone. Don't open/extract/unzip or anything of the sort.

      • Help i cant seem to get it. I tried form Q then from link then download to computer & then to phone it still aborts. I rechecked it went into sd no subfolders but still aborts. in my restore page my option says
        apply/sd card/update.zip

  • Worked perfectly for me. Great instructions and no problems here. Glad to have 2.2!!!

  • anyone know how to tether with the froyo?

    • The tethering apps (some with free versions and some paid) seem to still work. There is a built in tethering option, which you can enable with a widget app, however if you try to browse it will send you to a Verizon page asking you to pay $20/mo for 5GB.

Best option is to continue using the free/paid tether apps for now.

  • chris ponciano says:

    does it delete your stuff?

  • I'll leave a word of caution. I've upgraded following the instructions here. But, my droids been locking up every since. I've had to pull the battery to reset about 8 times in the last hour while just poking around new features. It is just unresponsive and sluggish.

If this doesn't improve...is my only option to factory reset this thing? It's frozen again.

    • I'm not sure what the options are really, however you might want to start by removing any apps you have installed, and see how it performs. I would be suspicious of apps, rather than the update itself. Could be an incompatible app. Maybe a home screen app?

      Just my 2cents.

  • Thanks Jamey. I deleted some apps and things. I can't say exactly what cleared the issue, but I've now had several hours of no problems.

I was able to get flash going, as well. I'm very pleased with the update. Even the small UI tweaks are all improvements IMO.

  • Can't get into to recovery menu. When I hold X and Power On it stalls at the Motorola Logo Screen and requires me to pull battery to reboot. Any Suggestions?

And yes Im sure im holding only X as im using a pen to hold down X and i let go of power once screen turns on. It just stalls on me.

  • help!!

im getting that the the installation was aborted?? i don't know if im doing it right...i downloaded the file, plugged in my phone to my commuter so i can pull up whats on the phone and moved the file onto my phone. Is there something else i need to do???????

  • Mine keeps aborting and ive tried a few times any help will work

  • I've tried to download the update and it keeps telling me its not supported, the content that is. I have a Motorola Droid and nothing has been udpated or downloaded, unzipped or anything. Can someone help me?

    • I guess no one is going to answer the ppl requesting help or throw out any kind of suggestion(s)...

  • tired of waiting... says:

mine is doing the same thing.. aborted.. i downloaded it from the link above.. anyone have another link? i am just so excited to get it!! i cant wait!! Thanks to all!! I did read some other forums that FRG01B Froyo update for the Motorola Droid has been halted due to unnamed bugs...

  • So, last week, I prematurely thought my problems were solved. My Droid will work all day, then go through periods where it is unusable and I have to pull the battery several times before it seems to settle down.

After a few days of frustration, and it freaking out when I really needed the GPS in downtown Atlanta, I did a factory reset. However, the phone still came back to life on 2.2. Again, it worked fine all day yesterday and started freaking out today.

I guess it could be an app. But, if anyone has any suggestions, or instructions to revert to 2.1, I would be grateful.

  • Hello all,
I recently downloaded froyo, but for some reason my system keeps rebooting itself. it goes from the motorola symbol in the beginning to the new droid emblem (like its rebooting) then it freezes and does the exact same thing over and over. I dont know what went wrong. Please help!

  • I followed the instructions above, and my phone said installation aborted. However, when I rebooted my phone, I have 2.2. Should I be worried?

  • I installed this update with no problems kept my fingers crossed and the install went well runs quite smoothly. much smoother then when i was running Eclair off of it

  • I have done this update it was easy and runs smooth however I would like to know how to go back to 2.1 so I can download the official froyo update thanks

  • the link is not working mega upload help me :(

  • Did not work but thanks for the help begin the process but got stuck in a sudden need to delete users or something

  • I tried to download the file, but I coudn't because it replies me that the server couldn't find the route. Can you please check the link you published. A question: Ir I use the 2.1 version in spanish, what happen if I use this version (I think is in english) with all my apps (in spanish too)?. Thanks a lot.

  • This is the mensage that send me the server:
The requested URL /updates/voles/signed-voles-FRG01B-from-ESE81.e48e48ff.zip was not found on this server.

  • Getting the same url not found, any ideas?

  • I tried the url also it worked for me but crashed my droid1 I did factory reset& waited for the push. When I got true update it worked for 3days then another push came through that made my phone call people@ 3am. Even when the battery was pulled. I upgraded phone to droid x and did factory reset on droid1 it makes a nice player capable mp3 player (like my daughters ipod but w/o the hassle of itunes)

  • ashley hubbard says:

i need an app for my motorla citrus that turns it into a wifi modeom so i use internet on my desktop computer. how do i do that?

  • I tried your update, I update and download it again several times, renamed, saved in the correct place and I did everything according to the instructions several times, and still writes that:
E: Can not open / cache / recovery / Commend
    Finding, Opening, Verifyng ...
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
    E: signature verification failed
    Installation aborted

I have a milestone, not verizon.
Is this update for Europe - Slovakia?
    Thanks
