Final Android 2.2 Update Officially Rolling Out To HTC EVO 4G (Seriously This Time) – Grab It Here

Well, that was fast, although not entirely unexpected – it seems the official (really this time) update v3.26.651.6-1.47.651.1  (let's call it simply .6) for the HTC EVO 4G is being rolled out as you read this, a whole day early.

As promised, it’s coming over the air - just go to your Settings > System updates and force it through.

If the OTA update is not showing up or if you've opted to install the earlier update last Friday (3.26.651.3-1.47.651.1 - let's just call it .3), then you can try downloading it via this direct link below and follow the steps in Friday's article to install.

We've confirmed that phones with the .3 OTA currently don't find the .6 update.

We haven't yet had a chance to try installing .6 over .3 manually using the link above.

Have you? Does it work?

Update #1: If you're having trouble seeing all downloaded apps in the Market (we were seeing 2, for instance), try this fix:
  • Settings -> Applications -> Installed applications -> All -> Market -> Clear data
  • Now start the Market again, and it should be all fixed up

In either case, you're safe, as HTC did mention they would be taking care of the .3 -> .6 situation:

Fortunately, HTC isn’t the only source for Froyo ROM's for the EVO – CM6 has been out for a few weeks now, and Flipz just released his own Froyo build, based on the previously-leaked build mentioned above (which I’m testing now – hands-on coming tomorrow).

    Is there anyone who is not seeing the update yet with the 2.1?

    Anyone update - how did it go?

    Is the Market there? Camera working? How's the battery?

      Market is fine, Cam is fine, dunno yet on the battery, haven't had it up long enough to really tell.

      Installed without any issues... Only time will tell whether the battery lasts longer. SPRINT should be sending us all extra batteries free of charge, or upgrading everyone to the Seidio 3200 watt hour battery and EVO back to cover it!!!

      SPEED! That's the biggest thing...Its faster!!!!!!! A LOT faster. If you don't use anything big or complicated on your phone that makes it slow down a bit then froyo won't be quite a big deal to you. To the avg EVO owner out there who just makes phone calls and checks email they won't notice much...but to other people who run big apps the difference is COLOSSAL!!

    Will try installing the update.zip on my Evo that has the previously leaked update and will report back.

    Too bad we don't get the OTA, I thought we would. Oh well.

      I'm not getting it to work at all. It keeps saying update failed. You also can't go back to the original build, that fails too.

    I have .3 successfully installed. Getting the installation of .6 aborted. States: error in sdcard/update.zip I have named it correctly and followed each step. Any ideas?

      Same here, no luck. I get the same error message when trying to validate the update. I guess we have to wait for HTC to give us the fix. I hope it doesn't require something extreme like a wipe or anything. That would suck.

        Are we able to flash the one of the previous OTA's and then auto update? I already had to wipe/factory reset to get the flash to start working and not crash my browsers

    I have tried twice to manually update from .3 to .6 and it has failed stating signature verification failed. Guess I'm going to have to wait for HTC to drop a fix.

      just wondering why you are trying to update from .3 to .6. I have .3 and i'm really happy. Does .6 have something that .3 does not?

        for me .3 is horribly slow on the text message front, it really seems choppy. not smooth like it used to be

    Having same errors as above. Does anyone know how to downgrade maybe to 2.1 to try and get the official 2.2?

      I have the original 2.1 rom.. I just don't know if is possible. Waiting on some responses to see if it is ok

      Just wait for HTC to build and push out an official patch. The differences will be minimal, if any.

      Good luck, I've been getting 140 validation errors every time I've tried. I've tried it with the 1.32 and 1.47 RUUs on XP, Vista and 7.

    I'm also having the same verification issue. Ever since this failed (I did a data wipe too) all application installations from the market reboot my handset. Wouldn't recommend trying this, hopefully reflashing the .3 version works...

    That's the beauty of rooting your phone. You can create full blown "Nandroid" backups of your setup then wipe and flash away. If things go badly, just restore your nandroid - easy peasy.

    Woohoo! Just finished installing and everything runs so much faster now! The EVO just got a lot more awesome!

    One word of caution during the install process, there are a couple of points during the install where the screen looks like it's frozen or nothing is happening for a while but this is normal so be patient and let it complete without disrupting the install!

    I tried going right to .6 without coming from.3 and I get the signature verification failed message everytime it tries to install.

      It does, but Sprint disables it since they charge for it. $30 bucks a month. Ugh!

    has anyone had this problem? I go to the various internet apps to browse the net, including hte native one for android, and after i open them and they load up the home page, or any page....they shut down and close....it must be a glitch with the new rom.....any ideas to help me?

    Installed last night around 2:00 AM (Eastern) just fine, seems to be working great. I will update with any issues, within the past couple of weeks (before the update) I was getting a lot of fore-restarts.

    Now I just need 4G in Metro-Detroit as oppose to Sprint rolling it out for Grand Rapids, Mi first! ha

    Upgraded to the Fresh Evo port of this OTA last night around 3am. so far my linpack score has went from 8-9 up to 29-31. as well as my quadrant score is up to number 2 spot

    just downloaded the OTA froyo from sprint and my phone seems to be stuck after telling it to update. I have a triangle with an exclamation point in it and a little green android standing beside it. Nothing happening. How long should I wait before taking the battery out and attempting a re-start?

    I see the 4th wallpaper selection didn't make a comeback.

    Also, I can't get the unlock pattern to work.
    Menu->settings->security->change screen lock->confirm pattern->pattern->draw pattern->continue->confirm->home->screen off->screen on->drag down.... back to home desktop. Didn't prompt me to unlock with the pattern !! wtf

      Actually, this is a new feature in 2.2 on the EVO, which I wanted to post about tonight. There should be another setting there that basically says "don't relock the lock for N minutes when screen goes out". That's my most favorite new feature.

        oh yeah, it says "lock phone after" and one can choose from 'immediately' to '15 minutes'.

        By default it seems to pick '3 minutes'.

    So what's the best way to root an Evo with the latest and greatest Froyo?

      I don't know... but I know I rooted my evo with UnRevoked3 and I can't get it to take the update. they claimed that when you get the update it will unroot your phone, which is what I was hoping for, but it looks like I'm going to have to try to unroot it before I can install the update. It locks up on the install every time I try it and have to take the battery out and re-start the phone to get it back working again.

      There are no ways that we know of yet, if you've updated. If we hear anything, we'll let you all know.

        Actually I found a way to install it by downloading the zip file, changing the name to update.zip, installing it on the sd card, then booting into recovery mode and installing the update.zip file. Everything works fine except I still have the superuser app in my applications. Of course I'm unrooted now, so there's no need for that app, but I can't figure out how to get rid of it.

    Does any one else notice that after the .6 update the audible touch tones do not work when dialing and the audible selection (click noise) does not work when making screen selections?

    I made an attempt to apply this v6 update over my v3 installed a few days ago and it does not go.

    "assert failed: apply_patch_check" blah... blah

    I also read in a few other posts that v6 users have some of the same problems as v3; such as the camera not working after update.

    So with that mind I will sit tight and wait for another bug fix update.

      V6 works fine. see my post above on how to install it. that method will work for you guys that installed the v3 also. Camera and everything else works fine. Nothing is crippled except you'll notice in the settings menu, we don't have "privacy" anymore... so ignore those videos that show you what to do in that menu. That means you can't do a factory reset anymore either, since that was in the privacy menu. Other than that, it's mostly eye-candy as far as the visible OS goes. New widgets (I don't like widgets in the first place because they constantly run and rob resources) and a flashlight (big deal)... and... you have to keep HTC Sense to see those changes. If you use another launcher, those upgrade widgets and things are not visible nor useable.
