While the current state of Android tablets is measly to say the least, it looks like that may be changing soon enough, with the Galaxy Tab that we will (hopefully) see announced in 3 days at IFA 2010, the recently announced ViewSonic ViewPad 7 Froyo tablet, and now five new Archos tablets.

Admittedly, the Archos name didn't exactly excite us (this is, after all, the same company that made the resistive touchscreen-impaired, buttonless, Android 1.6-laden, Archos 5 Internet tablet) but after a closer look at what they've got to offer, we think the manufacturer might be onto something here....

With the possible exception of Archos, there are no big names in the Android tablet field right now. If you have a tablet running a Google-flavoured OS, chances are it’s from Shenzen, has a resistive touchscreen, and will have been superseded by a newer model by the end of this paragraph. Enter ViewSonic. They’re a display company with some fairly well-regarded LCD monitors, which should bode well for the display of their newly announced, previously-rumored tablet. Except for one thing : ViewSonic aren’t making it. The ViewPad 7 is simply a rebadge of the OlivePad, a 7”, WVGA, ...

With the Atlantic hurricane season ratcheting up and several named storms expected to form before the season ends on Nov. 30th, it makes sense for those of us in potential hurricane zones to look for an app that will help keep an eye on developing tropical systems. For example, Hurricane Danielle has dissipated in the North Atlantic, but Earl is expected to hit the East Coast before the end of the week and Fiona is hot on its heels.

Several applications are available through the Android Marketplace with varying degrees of usefulness. All of them rely on public domain information ...

In case you’re one of many people eagerly awaiting the successor of the original Android phone, you may be excited to hear that CellPhoneSignal has some high-quality (albeit quite small), official pictures of the upcoming T-Mobile G2, which show off just how nice that keyboard looks (not to mention how good vanilla FroYo looks, too).

So, what do you think? Is this first HSPA+ compatible handset not enough for you to leave your Vibrant? Keyboard not good enough to leave your trusty old G1? Planning on buying one on launch day? Tell us in the comments!

Panzer Panic is a game that has been available on the Android Market for quite some time now in the form of a paid version, costing €2.99 (approx. $3.80 at the time of writing). Although it offers a really cool experience, some users clearly thought that the price was a little too steep, as it has only managed between 1000 and 5000 downloads in the Market. In response to this, the developers have just released a free version, which is exactly the same game, but with an advert on the bottom of the screen.

The popular, open-source media player firmware Rockbox has recently been made available for Android. Rather than run as an operating system, Rockbox operates as a standalone application that you can install as usual with an APK. Development is still on-going, but Rockbox dev kugel has a few pre-compiled APKs hosted for you to try out if you’re interested.

These builds are unofficial and are purely for demonstrative purposes, but they seem to work pretty nicely. Currently the navigation/control interaction method is touchscreen only, and screen rotation is ...

In what seems like preparation for their upcoming G2 handset, T-Mobile is planning on clearing out their selection of Android handsets by ending sales of the Motorola Cliq, Cliq XT, and T-Mobile MyTouch 1.2 on October 4.

Whatever the reason, it’s probably a good thing that these low-end handsets are going off the market - hopefully, it will help keep outdated OS's like Cupcake and Donut from growing in size. Unfortunately, this doesn’t help reassure owners of said phones that their updates will come in a timely fashion, if at all. The Cliq and Cliq XT are still on ...

DROID-X

Awesome news today on the Droid X front: the first custom ROM for the Droid X has been released by birdman. For anyone not living under a rock, this is a pretty big deal - Motorola was pretty serious about locking down the Droid X, and it's a relief to see that manufacturers can't completely kill the aftermarket.

The ROM seems to be based on the earlier leaked 2.2 ROM, and has only a handful of customizations:

v0.1 includes

  • OptiPNG optimized apk's
  • Deodexed
  • Busybox
  • Updated Superuser.apk (credits to chainsdd)
  • Removed
    • 3g hotspot
    • Kindle (market app)
    • Blockbuster (bankrupt company)
    • EMERGENCY

With the US release of Sony’s Xperia X10, we were given taglines such as “smarter is coming”, but with Android 1.6 running the show, smarter may be a little bit of a loose term for now. Those of us on the other side of the pond may be in luck pretty soon, however, as Sony Ericcson’s UK Twitter account posted a reply to a user stating that Android 2.1 is due for release in the UK “before the end of September this year.”

If this information is indeed accurate (and we sure hope that it is), then X10s all over ...

Good news for the 12 people who have managed to get a Motorola Charm - Universal Androot works perfectly well. For the uninitiated, Universal Androot is exactly what it sounds like: an app that can root a whole slew of Android devices (disclaimer: it doesn't unlock /system on all of them, though). Instructions are pretty simple:

  1. Download the latest version of the program from this XDA post to your computer.
  2. Copy the file to your SD card.
  3. Find and install it with your file browser of choice (I choose Android Mate in the market, or you can use Astro). Don’t

A few months back (before it launched), we found out that the Droid X would have limited HDMI functionality - mainly, it would only work in gallery mode. Today, we stumbled upon a new app on AppBrain called Real HDMI that seems to remove that restriction. Check out the item description:

Warning: This only works for the Droid X.

Finally you can enable and disable the HDMI port on your Droid X. Use your favorite video players, applications and emulators on your big screen TV or Stereo.

Samsung just sent out a press release that should help dampen the dullness today: according to Samsung, they've shipped over 1 million Galaxy S devices in the US. Not bad, especially considering they've only launched on 2 of the 6 carriers that will be getting the device. With such a hotly-anticipated and well-received line of devices, it's likely sales are really just getting started - after all, the Vibrant and Captivate only launched just over a month ago.

Samsung's Epic 4G will be launching on Sprint in just a few days (August 31), and rumor has it that Verizon's ...

Looks like CyanogenMod 6, Android's most popular ROM, has made its way out of the RC's and into final release. I've been running CM6 on my EVO for a little over a month now, and I love it. And as most people know, CM6 now covers a fair number of devices:

The above links lead to the CM6 info/download post on CM forums. The devices with no hyperlink don't have CM6 final yet - though they may have experimental builds (for example, the Incredible is on RC3). ...
