We’ve just received word that the EVO4G OTA to FroYo (internally known at HTC as update 3.26) is now available for download directly from HTC’s website. Link below.

Update #1: we just received another word from HTC that this is NOT the final update. The final is going to go out next week.

Update #2: all your settings should be preserved with this OTA. No data loss should occur.

You will lose root if you install this update. If you are running a custom ROM, please wait for your ROM developer to release the next version.

Download:

We’ve provided some simple instructions for installing the update:

1. Download the update file and rename it to update.zip.
Note #1: DO NOT UNZIP THIS FILE
Note #2: Make sure you didn't rename this to update.zip.zip by accident, if your Windows is configured to not show file extensions.
2. Place in the root of your SD card (connect via USB and mount as a drive, transfer via bluetooth, download directly on the phone - pick your poison).
3. Reboot into recovery mode (hold the Volume Up button while your phone is booting).
4. You will be presented with the boot loader. The Volume Up/Down buttons navigate the menu, and the Power button selects.
Note: you may see the red exclamation (!) point at this stage. Try mashing the up/down/power buttons and wait for 10-15 seconds. The recovery should eventually come up.
5. Select Bootloader.
6. Scroll down to Recovery and select it.
7. The phone will reboot again, this time into recovery.
8. Select “apply update.zip” or “install from .zip” (depending on your recovery image).
9. The installation process will take 15-20 minutes and a few reboots.
10. Enjoy!

Sprint has also released a piece with details on the update’s changes (aside from the obvious):

Ok im doing everything but when i click to apply sdcard update zip it keeps aborting the the installation, it says no such fille exist.. can you make a youtube video and send me the link or post it that will be awesome dude.. thanks.. or tell me what i should do from that point???

• Dre

It is also telling me that it is aborting the installation ... why is that ?

• Abby

I'm getting the same error as Sinceer.

• Brian S. Omaha,NE

if you have google talk i would be glad to help you out there, being i just did the install about an hour ago

• Russ

Do I unzip the main file, then move THOSE contents to the root dir of my EVO? I tried it with the main file I downloaded and got nothing.

• Nick

Confused: Does this require root access? Because when booting into recovery, I'm not seeing any option to apply the *.zip file. When I choose the "recovery" option at boot, it spits me to a screen with an image of the phone an an exclamation point. I have to hard reset the phone by removing the battery at that point.

• Girish

When the red exclamation mark appears, press and hold Volume Up button, and then press Power button.
Then select "apply update.zip" by volume up and power button

• Tech_Junkie

Thanks, this worked for me. Updating now.

Are all settings, customizations, etc. preserved or is it essentially wiped?

• http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Everything should be preserved.

• RCDheliracer

I am Also getting the phone with an exclamation point when I try recovery boot. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank You

• RRTFM

When the red exclamation mark appears, press and hold Volume Up button, and then press Power button.
Then select “apply update.zip” by volume up and power button

yeah same thing happened to me im going to factory reset then try to apply update

• Frost

I get the same thing - the giant red exlamation and triangle

• kyle

Ditto. Can't seem to get past this.

• Isidhu

I have the same issue. i dont see the apply zip option and only an image tried the steps many times with same results. hard reset after that loads the old software version

• Phil

Got it installed!!! Waiting for it to boot back up....

• Lloyd Christmas

Doesn't work at all. Tried multiple times and it keeps booting to exclamation point over a picture of the phone.

• http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Keep waiting and/or pressing buttons. I had the same thing but in about 15 seconds it loaded the recovery menu fine.

• Ristar

I waited for a few minutes and mashed the volume buttons, but nothing happened.

• Dre

mash the buttons then press the power button thats what got me to the screen

• R10T

Do we need to rename the zip file to update.zip? My phone isn't able to find the file with its current naming convention...

• http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Yes, rename it to update.zip

• Alli

oh no, After i selected 'recovery' my phone rebooted quickly to a screen with a picture of a small phone and a triangle with an '!' in the middle... did i just brick my phone??

• Mike

Nick I am having the same problem I dont get it...Can anyone help?? or at least explain the "image of the phone and an exclamation point"

• Valos

Rename it to update.zip boot into recovery and you see the phone with the red ! hit power and up again and it should work.

• john

When you get the phone and exclamation mark hold power and volume up at the same time

• Frost

that didn't work for me - just tried it twice

• spyngamerman

ahh i got past the exclamation thanks john :)

• Alli

Mike, i took my battery in and out and rebooted, went back to normal... Will give it one more shot..

• David

Alli just wait about 15 or 20 seconds and then press the volume up and power button together. then the menu will show up. Each time a new screen showed up for me I had to wait about 15 seconds before it would respond.

Also after the loader is done and it restarts you will see a green recycle arrows with a down arrow in it. Just keep waiting it it will turn the screen black a few time then the phone will restart. Then the sprint screen will come up and after a few seconds will say your upgrade is successful. you will slide down to unlock the phone then an HTC screen will appear with a grey box and it will have a loading spinner again just wait for it to finish it will take a while although it will present you with a percentage of completion, Then your done. A typing tutorial will appear.

• josh

Same thing happened to me... exclamation point over phone graphic....

• Bryan

In order to get past the phone graphic with the red exclamation point you'll need to hold the volume up and the power key for a second or so, one you do you'll see a second menu (black back ground) and then use the volume key to select "apply update.zip"

• JJ

Folks, if you have the red exclamation, just hold up volume and hit power again. That will hopefully do it for you.

• josh

pressed power and up at the end and it worked. Thanks! (well, technically it's not done, so don't quote me... but at least it gave me option for update.zip and is now doing something...)

• Alli

oh, I missed re-naming the file... too excited.
will try again

• RJeezy

It says not file attached to sd card after i select update.zip. It also says aborted?????

• EVOlved

rename the .zip file to update.zip

• Russ

Installed. Now a different problem. Keeps force closing Sense. Won't get past it. Any help?

• chris ponciano

oh my god, theres WAYYYY to many people updating that shouldn't, if you don't know how to work on cars you probably shouldn't try to change and re-time a timing belt, same with this, if you cant even figure out how to install the file to your phone i would HIGHLY suggest waiting the 3 days for the OTA push. PLEASE. Don't make us look bad. i don't want to see more posts on other sites slandering us with titles "FROYO update kills phones" because some mistake gets blown out of proportion and they use generalizations to describe a singular incident as a universal statement for all EVO's

• Frost

you know dude - if you don't jump in you can't ever learn...

• Lloyd Christmas

Its a phone not a popularity contest.....

• Frost

I got it another issue - renamed the file to update.zip, then when the red exclamation came, i held volume up and then pressed power, then selected apply sdcard :update.zip
then it said E: failed to open /sdcard/update.zip (no such file or directory) E:signature verifaication failed, then it aborted the install

• RJeezy

Recieved the same thing...how do we get past this?

• xeionp

I was having the same issue. rename file "update" not "update.zip" and issue was solve. windows was adding .zip to the file name.

• Benny

I got the same thing a few times, i finally just gave up :(

• http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Is everyone who got this running a custom ROM? If so, there should be an option below the "apply update" menu that toggles signature verification.

If it's the original, perhaps your download got corrupted. It should be exactly 88566651 bytes.

• Phil

I found that you have to rename the zip file to update.zip and press the down button followed by the power button. You then can select the zip file.

• http://www.techpowerup.com Fitseries3

will this wipe my phone?

• Alli

JJ, thank you so much.
worked... or at least it's installing

• http://tech.redwhiteandfat.com All Things Tech – RWaF

Thanks for the post. Put a link on my blog with the exact steps I followed as well. Running 2.2 now!

http://tech.redwhiteandfat.com/manual-install-android-22-evo4g-instructions/

• Superdave

Just name the file "update". In windows it already has the .zip tag at the end. what you guys are doing is naming it Update.zip.zip

• Frost

makes sense lets give it a whirl

• Frost

epic win, thanks dude

• Benny

thanks! this fixed my issue too... updating right now!

• SINCEER

OK here is the BIG question do you have to all this on windows, because im doing it on a IMAC????

• http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

No, you can do it on a Mac too, since we don't run any Windows specific programs.

• Steve

rename the file Update.zip...when booting into Recovery mode, hit the Up Button adn Power button to display menu when you see black screen and exclamation point. From the menu here select Update.zip

• lsdjohn

"* Download http://liveimage.htc.com/OTA_Supersonic_3.26.651.3-1.47.651.1_releaseu2cqjc2e98n4o6xn.zip and rename to update
* Copy the update.zip to the root of your SD card (the name must remain as update)

When you want to launch the recovery image

* Turn on your device with ‘volume down’ pressed and select ‘Recovery’
* When the exclamation mark appears, press and hold ‘volume up’ then press ‘power’
* Select the second option, ‘Apply sdcard:update.zip
* That’s it, FroYo!

It works, I just did it. It takes a while, and reboots a few times. It hung on me on the final reboot - after a couple of minutes I pulled the battery and it booted back up fine. Have new version up and running with LED flashlight, etc."

haha I just put that same thing in. Thats classic, first time around I saw the error, so I went to the root dir. and saw the zip.zip and was like.. wtf.. took care of it and tada, 2.2

• Jorge

Yeah had that issue originally "update.zip.zip" but i changed it to "update" in windows so it would be Update.zip same issue..

Downloaded again just to make sure the file wasn't corrupt..

Guess ill just wait for the OTA..

Phone updated just fine. Stuck in "Sense Force Close" cycle.

Any help at all?

• Max

Hey, just to let you all know. I did the proper steps and it didn't work so I went into linda file manager (app) and checked it in the root, and it evidentally renames itself update.zip.zip, so if you don't have one, download a file manager app and go in and fix that cuz it will happen.

• CaffinatedOne

Make sure that when you rename it, that you just rename it "update" in windows.. otherwise you'll end up with "update.zip.zip" and the bootloader won't find it.

I didn't realize that windows did this until I checked the file name on a file manager on the phone itself.

• Alli

Sweet. I'm Done and it works...(so far anyways).. Thank you everybody on this thread and site.
android police, you guys take donations?

• Isidhu

After the phone image with exclamation sign on it.
1. Press up volume key(keep pressing)
2. press volume key
now pressing these keys should bring up the next window with the update from zip option on it.
Still updating lets see how it goes

• Tech_Junkie

for those at the bottom of the thread, look up top at the update message:
Update: we just received word from HTC that this is NOT the final update. The final is going to go out next week (my guess is, they want to make sure it doesn’t cause any havoc, and call it official only then).
The download started fine once I changed the name from "update.zip" to just "update," as someone suggested a few posts ago. Still downloading as of this post.

This is the best Friday night ever! Well, it will be once I actually see 2.2 up and running.

• DKDiveDude

Questions:
1) Will this update work for mine as I rooted with unrevoked3?
2) And fi so will it still be rooted after update?
3) Will it wipe my installed aps, contacts, and so on?

Stock browser and skyfire seem broke. Auto closes with certain web pages. Dolphin hd seems ok. Hopefully next weeks ota will fix that... otherwise installed perfect and flies.

FroYo now lives on my EVO 4G. Sweet! Update was almost perfectly smooth!

Seems to be having a problem with syncing at the moment. Can't pull any location data either.

• Benny

Finally got it installed on my phone and now my camera or camcorder stopped working, when i press the icon it starts to launch, then just kicks back to the home screen.

• http://www.evofuse.com Wes

So if this isn't the final FroYo, update what will happen when the real OTA update is pushed?

Will it not get pushed to those of us who have used this update?

• Tech_Junkie

at best i would guess that it will updat b/c the official update will have a later date; at worst we'll have to manually download the file and apply it the same way we applied this update...presuming of course it will be available for download :O

• tommyv04

Also, I noticed that the app market only shows I have two applications installed in the downloads section.

• Russ

Installing a 3rd time. After this I'm going to be forced to do a factory reset. Everything goes totally fine until Sense loads. It goes through a screen counting to 100% then gets stuck in a force close cycle.

• Bek

Hey, the mirror no longer seems to work!! :-(

• http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

I guess there is a bug on their side if you name the file a certain way. Try now - it's fixed.

• Eric

I just updated it successfully and I was wondering. If I enable the sprint mobile hotspot will i be charged for it? Because I never added the $30 fee for mobile hotspot. But does that mean I can still use it?

• DevilDogVIKING

I wouldn't use sprint's app for the hotspot, just use a tethering app, actually doesn't froyo come with that?

• Mike

That mirror file isn't working for me, says it doesn't exist...

• http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Sorry about that - filevo has a bug with certain file names. Try now - it's fixed.

• krodami

when you see the red exclamation point inside the triangle, hold the up button and then press the power button. it will say e: can't open \cache\recovery\... wait; eventually it will bring a menu with an option to update update.zip. You may also need to hold the up button and press the power button after it tells you to press the power button to reboot.

• bill

if i install this will i still get the OTA on 8/3?

• marco

i get it into recovery and press update but then my phone just reboots. i try it again and it does the same thing????

• Brian S. Omaha,NE

Confirmed it does work, when there is a pause in the recovery option it will say no image found 4 times keep going, took me 3 tries to get it right, do recovery and it will show the screen with the ! and phone. Wait and then hit the down volume and power it pulled up and loaded up with no issues. So far all my apps work and i moved them all to the sd card via astro before the update and they are all on there now with the exception of google maps.

ok so I'm having the same error over and over. I downloaded twice and renamed the file name is just "update" without the ".zip," but i still get the same "abort installation..."

I had my evo rooted, then restored to stock rom this morning 'cause I was having problems. Could this be why I can't update this way??

• Shaheed

it might be the file. it might be the incomplete or corrupted one they mentioned above.

• Witemike

I downloaded from the mirror and would get to select recovery. After that I was getting the phone with triangle and !. I kept trying to push volume up/down and power all together and then the screen came up to install update.zip but every time i would select to install it, it would intiate the install for about 5/10 seconds and the abort and restart the phone.

I tried 4 to 6 times before searching the internet and finding this site.
What I saw on here that allowed the installation process to work was to only press the volume up button and power button together quickly, instead of both volume up and volume down together.

I'm not sure if that is what caused it to work or not but it finally went all the way through with the install process and now I am running Froyo.

Also, when i had the triangle screen with the !, on the last attempt when it finally worked, it didn't ask to install the Update.zip, I just pressed the volume up/power button simultanously and it started the install process by itself. Little weird but maybe that will help someone else out too.

Also with version 2.1 Linpack was benchmarking my evo around 6.7 MegaFlops and after the install Linpack benchmark is at almost 40 MegaFlops. I like it!

You're running a custom recovery then most likely - find the option to turn off signature verification, and it should fix the issue.

• alford756

Just followed the update instructions. Loving it runs like a beast and installed flawlessly thx android police.

• Jeremy

Works perfectly!!!! This was so easy to do.

• http://www.thebrokenapple.com Mike

Anyone else notice that if you open any site running with Flash the browser just quits?

• billybadazz

you have to restore your phone bck to the factory. then it will work fine

• tony

i did it and it installed. it looks exactly like 2.1 though. i do have the additional apps like flashlight, the led option on the camcorder, app sharing. somethings look a little different. but its not too much faster and it looks the same on the homescreen. is this because its an unofficial release?

• Bill Mitchell

Hmmm,

My phone is rooted and I am running the AM Recovery Mod. Also have CM6 RC1 currently. It's a bit hinky so I decided to give up my root for a few days and try this.

Did everything exactly as stated here but immediately got "Signature Not Verified" death quote. No exclamation point. Just ended there.

Also, the download says it is supposed to be 84MB and change but my final .zip file is 86MB and change. This was true from both mirrors that I downloaded from.

Has this file somehow become corrupted everywhere?

P.S.,
To those who are concerned "it looks just like 2.1", it is supposed to. The point of 2.2 is not to make it prettier but to make it work better. You will find when browsing, etc that this build is MUCH faster than 2.1. Don't be bummed just because a 3D hologram didn't appear above your screen calling you Obiwan :-)

• Bill Mitchell

Ok, here is my exact error message:

Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:No signature (624 files)
E:Verification failed

Installation aborted.

No red exclamation points. No signature toggles. That's it, game over.

I'm running the AM Recovery (one of the most popular). Could that be the problem?

Any help ;-)

(also, I've downloaded this from two different website mirrors and I am getting 86,491 kb which seems wrong).

• http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

84.4MB, 86,490KB, 88,566,651 bytes are all correct values - the conversion is not 1:1000, it's 1:1024, so the math is right.

Regarding using a custom recovery, you may need to find a setting to "toggle signature verification" first - at least there is an option like that in ClockworkMod recovery I'm using.

• Bill Mitchell

Lol, apparently I am unloved so I'll talk to myself (and oh yeah, its like 5 am on the West Coast and all my potential helpers are sleeping).

I really do hate to give up my root with FREE tethering and SetCPU. I wish CM6 would come out with RC2 for the EVO. I don't use sense anyway (use LauncherPro).

Can't live without the horizontal app dock on the bottom of the home screen. Have no idea why HTC Sense insists on sticking with their current design and no dock - seems like a waste of some valuable real estate. With that dock I really only need 3 homescreens.

• http://www.gizmoji.com Naresh

You made it very simple going to try it now

• worldbfree4me

Thanks, worked like a Charm on the 1st try. Much love to the WebOS hack community (R.I.P. Palm Pre) for preparing me for this challenge.

• Mark

worked perfectly...just follow the instructions...

• Bill Mitchell

So I am the only EVO owner on planet earth that is getting this error message?

Install from sdcard…
Finding update package…
Opening update package…
Verifying update package…
E:No signature (624 files)
E:Verification failed

Installation aborted.

Swell.

• http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

What recovery are you using?

• SanityKills

Signature verification error resolution (worked for me):

Download and install latest RUU (RUU_Supersonic_1.47.651.1_Radio_2.05.00.06.10_release_CL195459.exe). I was receiving this error no matter what I tried and this got me up and running with the 2.2 update. I previously had clockworkmod installed. Have no idea if that was relative to my problem or not.

• Bill Mitchell

Where do you run this? Not from the Root since it's not a .zip file but an .exe. Do you run this from your desktop tethered to the phone?

• SanityKills

After installing the 2.2 update is it safe to assume that we can't go back to 2.1? I receive a bootloader error when attempting to run the above RUU from 2.2 environment. I presume that once the official 2.2 comes out I can flash to that though? Then wait for the rooted version?

• tommyv04

So, as far as I can tell, flash is broken. I wonder if it has anything to do with the flash patch that came out a while back that enabled flash without root... Is anyone else having issues with flash crashing the stock browser?

• witemike

My flash has been working fine for me. But I haven't nodded my phone one bit, I almost feel like I'm the only one on here that hasnt, tho is really like to overclock this beast but I just don't wanna make this battery go even faster than it already does

• cjrivera04

is anyone having battery problems with this update???

• http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

The EVO that I updated in this post (my co-worker's) is having battery problems. He called me yesterday to say that he's dropped 10% in the last 15 minutes.

• cjrivera04

I'm wondering if there are third party apps that are messed up. In three hours my battery was at 30% and I barely used the thing. 20 minutes of music at the gym and 15 minutes at the most of internet browsing. Any one else having battery issues please post if you have a fix. Thanks!

• Bill Mitchell

Well, the powers that be told us this was not a final build with some broken parts. I am guessing maybe battery usage is one of the "broken parts".

I decided to dump CM6 RC1 (no offense, but VERY unstable) and go back to FreshToast 1.0.1 which is rock stable and gives me over 50 FPS (which is clearly noticeable).

I think Ill even wait past Tuesday for the possible Sprint download on this 2.2. As you may recall, 1.47 bricked some phones first time around and as hard as a new EVO is to get, I don't want to brick mine ;-).

I am guessing that within a week and with their hands on this latest Sprint 2.2, FreshToast et al will have their versions out for those rooted amongst us.

May just wait - lol - or may not :-)

• tony

also having battery issues. i left mine on like usual while i sleep. it was at 30 percent and when i woke up it was already at 8.

• JAHUNTER

Flash Is Not Working!

• Jonathan

The download link is erroring out on fileevo :( cant grab the update!

• billybadazz

if you r having prob try restoring your phone to factory afetr you download the update

• Bill Mitchell

Well, I have no hair left. I simply CANNOT get this to work.

I am using the AM Recovery Mod and am betting that is the issue. It has no toggle for signatures.

Will try the clockwork and see if it gets better.

• Bill Mitchell

**Update:

Still no joy. Changed over to Clockwork Recovery. Installation began (gave me hope) then died.

I reflashed back to stock 1.47 but that didnt help either.

Someone mentioned that Clockwork has a "signature toggle". None that I can see.

Basically, as far as I can tell, if your phone is rooted this bad boy wont load.

• Bill Mitchell

Has anyone with a rooted phone been able to get this to work? I've tried everything and it always says the file is broken. I tried downloading it from 2 different mirrors and same error.

• Me
• RoyLeesWorld

Everything working fine thanks

• Alli

Yes, battery is draining faster than usual.
Ironic because the main reason I updated to froyo was because of the supposed better battery performance.
I know others have asked but if we did this update, will still be able to get the OTA update after aug 3rd as well?? Anyone?

• alford757

Battery issue as well drains much quicker install was a breeze though. Hopefully official its release fixes battery issue.

• Bill Mitchell

I just bagged it and went with the CM6 nightly updates via Rom Manager (seriously great program if you plan on rooting and trying out different ROMS).

CM6 is running very smooth right now and he has fixed the fps lock so i am getting about 50 fps right now which looks nice.

• Ray

Is Hulu working for anyone, after the update? I have flash 10.1.72.7. but no Hulu..

• translux

Wow what a difference in overall performance! And this is not a placebo effect either. I ran Quadrant before and was something like 5th or 6th in the list with a score in the mid 500's now I'm 2nd with a score of 1187. This is without any tweaking!

• CoachGary

Once connected as USB drive, is this the SD card I am looking at.

Folders:
adobe
HTC Sync
kindle
Music
QiK

Please help.

• CoachGary

Never mind. It was the SD card as I suspected.

Moved over the update.zip file, rebooted as instructed and volia....It is wonderful, and Voice Command over Bluetooth works fantastic!

Lovin this new Froyo update!

• Bill Mitchell

Yep, Froyo is super smooth and fast. I think a lot of people were expecting it to "look" different and may be disappointed.

All the big changes were under the hood.

Still, everything is better ;-)

P.S., If you don't think you notice much difference, Nandroid this flash and go back to a 1.47 ROM. It will seem SOOO SLOOOOW.

• Bill Mitchell

There were two programs I own that I couldn't access in the Marketplace using CM6 RC1. I just used Rom Manager, create a Nandroid of my installation, re-flashed my 1.47 Rom, accessed the programs in Marketplace, backed them up using Titanium and the re-installed my backup.

Will be nicer when Marketplace is fully functional. Although this worked it was clearly the long way round ;-)

• http://www.androiddevelopmenttalk.com Android application developer

Froyo works fine , we tested it yesterday , me and few of my friends did this and its smooth and sexy i loved it

• Will Nelson

Just got the official froyo from the ota works nice :)
