If you were hoping for a break in Android upgrade posts now that Froyos been announced, I’ve got bad news. During yesterdays web-centric keynote, Google announced the WebM project, and the folks over at Eurodroid noticed a tasty little bit of information on the FAQ page: a tentative release date for Gingerbread.

The FAQ in question states that WebM support in Android is expected in the Gingerbread release which is currently planned for Q4, 2010! Even though Froyo was just officially announced this morning, we now have a general idea as to when Gingerbread will start hitting devices....

Today is Day Two of the Google I/O 2010 conference, and the Android universe is celebrating and rioting in the streets (in a good way - like Mardi Gras). In addition to speed (2x-5x faster than Eclair), support for Flash Player 10.1 Public Beta/AIR Developer Pre-Release, and native tethering/ hotspot support, there are a number of changes that will make your Android life easier.

Update by Artem Russakovskii: You guys are all correct - there should be no gingerbread icon here unless Google actually confirms that this is what is indeed happening.

If a feature will not be available

There has been a lot of speculation about the features of Android 2.2, codenamed “Frozen Yogurt” or “Froyo” for short. I have been fortunate enough to have had plenty of time to work with a 2.2 device, using it as my day-to-day smartphone.

Now that Froyo has been announced at Google IO, lifting the embargo on the non-disclosure agreement of what Android 2.2 brings to the general public, we are bringing you some notes on the new features I have been taking for granted for the past few weeks.

Quick update from the Android Blog: "Android 2.2 will be ...

Due to the amount of information crammed into day 1 of the Google I/O conference, I am blitzing through everything that happened, keeping it short and to the point.

Many of the older device owners and early adopters will be glad to hear this one - I've talked to a bunch of Google folks in charge of developing Android at the Google I/O, and they told me that technically it would be possible to put Froyo on any device on the market now, including the G1.

Since I was trying to specifically concentrate on the G1s due to those devices ...

And The Coolest Gadget Of Google I/O Award Goes To… AR Drone. [Video + Pics, Google I/O Blitz Coverage, Day 1]

Due to the amount of information crammed into day 1 of the Google I/O conference, I am blitzing through everything that happened, keeping it short and to the point.

Right next to the Chevy Volt, which, by the way, is quite a looker, I saw a couple of guys playing with odd flying machines, called AR Drones. After spending a few minutes talking to them, we got a nice lengthy demo, and let me tell you, this flying monster is beyond cool.

  • AR Drone is a flying RC type UFO looking thing
  • here is the kicker: it is controlled by

What a day this has been at the Google I/O!

I have run around and talked to numerous extremely interesting people, including Googlers who have hinted (nothing is official until it's announced tomorrow and, of course, they could be trying to trick us) and pretty much unofficially confirmed some very interesting details about Android 2.2, also known as Froyo.

Performance

First up, I have confirmed that JIT will definitely be included. As we already broke earlier, simple benchmarks show a 450% improvement in speed over Android 2.1 Eclair, due to JIT.

But this is just the beginning. JIT ...

Android Phones From All Over The World Showcased At Google I/O [Google I/O Blitz Coverage, Day 1]

Due to the amount of information crammed into day 1 of the Google I/O conference, I am blitzing through everything that happened, keeping it short and to the point.

There was a special case set up at Google I/O today with pretty much every Android phone ever made to date, from all over the world. It was really impressive to realize how many Android phones are out there right now and really put things in perspective, especially if you compare to Apple and its couple of iPhone revisions.

I didn't snap pictures of everything and skipped common phones, like the ...

Google Shwag And Secret Messages Encoded On The Google I/O T-Shirts
0

I meant to post this in the morning but ran out of time, so this may be a little old news now. Apologies if you've already seen it.

--------

Yesterday was day 0 of the Google I/O conference. During this day, presenting developers set up their demo stations, known here as sandboxes, register, check in, and last but not least - receive shwag, also known as "free crap".

This year, the official shwag included:

  • a Motorola Droid or a Nexus One
  • an official Google I/O t-shirt (displayed below)
  • 2 little Android figurines (displayed below)

After playing around ...

Since a lot of you have been wondering, I wanted to post a brief confirmation that the official version of the HTC Hero 2.1 update Sprint released today is exactly the same as the one we covered on May 14th, 5 days ago.

Both files share the following characteristics:

  • 124139523 bytes (118M)
  • Version 2.27.651.5

HTC's servers are so slammed right now that I am getting about 3KB/s downloading - you might as well download the leaked file instead - they're exactly the same.

Happy updating, guys!

First EVO 4G Review Hits The Web!
3
Last Updated: July 24th, 2011

Looking for a tasty little news snack before the big keynote at Google I/O tomorrow? Well, you’re in luck, because it appears that Walt Mossberg over at All Things D dropped his EVO 4G review tonight.

First EVO 4G Review Hits The Web!

The review’s fairly short…it’s almost more of a preview than a proper rundown, but I’m sure the usual suspects (Engadget, Gizmodo, MobileCrunch), will cover the device in greater detail in their reviews. Until those start popping up though, what can we glean from Mossberg’s?

  • It’s fast. Walt says the phone’s 4G capability ‘offers the highest consistent downstream data speeds I have ever seen on

Get The Latest Version Of Fennec Every Day - Mozilla Now Making Nightly Builds Of Firefox For Android
4

Excited about finally having Firefox running on your Android phone? Not so fast - Firefox for Android, codenamed Fennec, is still in early alpha stages. However, an alpha build released a few weeks ago has given us a decent preview and instilled hope of a great browser to come.

After being quiet for some time, Stuart Parmenter and Vladimir Vukićević, Mozilla engineers, today announced that they had launched the Fennec nightly build system.

This means that every night the latest and greatest (or buggiest, depending on the day) Fennec build will be uploaded for everyone to ...
