Prospective EVO 4G owners: go ahead and shave $29.99 off your expected monthly bill from Sprint. We’re still over a week away from the official launch of the phone, and it seems that it’s already been rooted. The hackers responsible for the root haven’t released many details at the moment, but they did provide us with several pictures and a video of the hack.

For those unaware (all 3 of you left?), ‘rooting’ a phone is another way of saying that users can now have complete access to a phones operating system (you can see more details here). We’ve ...

If you are a Sprint Hero owner and want the latest official 2.1 update baked into a custom ROM with root, then you currently have only one alternative - the Fresh ROM.

Custom ROMs For The Hero

There are pretty much only 2 main Sprint Hero custom ROMs - DamageControl (by damageless and TrevE) and Fresh (by flipz). Both are very good, have an excellent track record, and great communities behind them.

I've personally been using DamageControl on my Hero but post-official 2.1 update, flipz has moved a little faster than damageless and TrevE, and incorporated it into his ...

On day 2 of the Google I/O conference, I spent about 20 minutes talking with a knowledgeable HTC representative at the HTC booth and tried to get some comments on a few questions a lot of you wanted answered.

1. EVO 4G Will Not Arrive With Froyo

This information is coming directly from the HTC rep who seemed very knowledgeable. The newly announced Froyo update is not going to be coming to EVO 4G in time for launch on June 4th, contrary to what we thought earlier (i.e. EVO getting an OTA update after the Froyo announcement). HTC only ...

If you've been waiting for official FM radio support in your Nexus One - and I know there are hundreds of you, then you will have to keep waiting, possibly forever.

One thing is certain - the official Nexus One Froyo release will not include FM radio support, told me one of the core Android engineers at the Google I/O conference a couple of days ago.

I went to Android Office Hours where everyone had a chance to ask core developers anything they wanted (I managed to grab 2 Android dev books there too - awesome!). I was told that ...

LG_Ally Full

Just like most Verizon Android phones, the LG Ally garnered plenty of hype with its advertising campaign – in this case, it was used as a promotional tie-in with Iron Man 2. With only a 600 MHz CPU and 3.2MP camera, it’s a pretty mid-range phone, but you’re also getting Android 2.1 and hardware keyboard, so at $99 it’s not an awful phone.

The phone was set for release on May 20, but now it seems that release has been pushed back. Instead of being available for sale, the Ally is still listed as pre-order only, and customers who had ...

HTC's Sense UI (user interface) includes plenty of features that could make those with vanilla Android jealous, most of which involve the home screen. Phones running the custom UI have their own set of high quality widgets, which includes a "flip clock" that plenty of Android users seem to clamor over. The widget itself is four icons wide and two icons in height, and includes a clock that flips between numbers, the temperature, and icons to denote the current weather. The Flip Clock widget is so popular that alternatives for those without the Sense UI have begun to make their ...

A user over at Howard Forums has leaked what appears to be a ‘Getting Started’ manual for an as of yet unknown Motorola phone. Rumor has it that this is the Motorola Shadow/MB810, a phone that we’ve seen in random leaks here and there for the last few months.

motorola-slate-rumor-rm-eng

Apparently it’s an ultra-thin slider, which has some speculating that it will be Verizon’s follow up the original Droid. If this is in fact the MB810, then we know a little bit about the expected specs:

  • 4.3 inch screen
  • HDMI port
  • 8 Megapixel camera
  • 1080P Video Recording
  • 802.11 b/g/n

BREAKING: Android 2.2 Froyo OTA Now Available For The Nexus One!
75

Check the bottom for the most recent updates

It looks like Google has started the rollout process of Froyo to the Nexus One. Go to your device's settings and have it check for updates - there is a chance that you can download it right now.

MG Siegler of TechCrunch has successfully performed the update after seeing an update notification on his Nexus One and snapped the photos below.

At the Google I/O conference, the only answer I could get from Android developers regarding Froyo release to the N1 was "soon". However, they hinted that it would *really* soon, and ...

Among the myriad wonders and glories unveiled at Google I/O this year, there were a few standouts. One of them is the highly anticipated Google TV.

Google has made it abundantly clear: choosing between the TV and the computer is a bad thing. Very bad, indeed. So, we should put them together in an intuitive way that allows us to enjoy the benefits of both without losing the benefits of either one.

According to Google’s very limited homepage for Google TV,

Google TV is a new experience made for television that combines the TV you know and love

HTC EVO 4G First Impressions And A Mini Hands-On Review
32
Last Updated: July 24th, 2011

After I've finished unboxing the HTC EVO 4G that Google gave out at the Google I/O conference, I started playing with the phone and noting down things that are different from other phones, things that are interesting, and things that bug me.

Note that this is not meant to be a full review - the bullet points are just my first impressions after 2 hours of use. Think of this post as a mini hands-on review:

The Screen

  • The first thing you notice is the screen THE SCREEN. It is HUGE.
  • The screen is quite glossy, I think

HTC EVO 4G Unboxing And First Impressions
4

Wow, Google, I still can't believe after giving out a Droid, you surprised us, Google I/O attendees, with an EVO 4G as well, 2 weeks before it is released to the public.

I unboxed mine this morning and started playing with it right away. Enjoy these unboxing photos (as much as you can enjoy someone else uboxing something you want) as well as a video of EVO 4G playing a Youtube video of a Starcraft 2 match.

First impressions to follow are now live.

Sprint Mobile Hotspot App On HTC EVO 4G Hands-On
8
Last Updated: July 24th, 2011

As you may know, the HTC EVO 4G comes with a mobile hotspot capability out of the box, even in Android 2.1, for $30 a month.

While Froyo (Android 2.2) will indeed include a similar mobile hotspot capability baked right into the OS, it is unknown at this point whether Sprint will rip it out before shipping to the EVO 4G customers or not.

Regardless of what will happen in the future, we are here now, and Sprint included a mobile hotspot app with the EVO that is in dire need of reviewing.

The application is called Sprint ...

Want To Relive The Moment? Now You Can – The Android Keynote Is Now Online
3

Where were you at 8:30AM PDT this morning? Working? Pfft. Work is for losers. You should have been on Youtube watching the live stream of today’s Android keynote. You know, the one where Froyo was officially announced?

Well, if you were one of the unfortunate souls stuck at work with blocked Youtube access, or a nosy boss, or maybe you’d just like to watch the heavy handed Apple bashing and awe inspiring features announced all over again, you’re in luck.

Google has put up the keynote in its entirety for your streaming pleasure. I’ll embed the videos below, or you ...
