Last Updated: January 20th, 2011

Introduction

In this tutorial, I will guide you through the easiest and most reliable way to fully and 100% back up and restore your Android phone.

By fully back up, I don't mean backing up just your address book or your emails, or your dog. I mean EVERYTHING that resides on your phone with the exception of the SD card - what we will create is essentially a full image of your phone's current state that you can restore to at any time as if nothing happened. This image will be written to your SD card which you ...

Sony Ericsson, a well known mobile arm of the Japanese company Sony Corp and Swedish Ericsson, posted its first profit in years, following a cost-cutting measure and introduction of new phones to the market, including the XPERIA X10 - its first Android based device.

Profits for Q1 2010 were EUR21 mil, compared to a loss of EUR293 mil a year ago.

In mid-2008, Sony Ericsson started a transformation program with the aim of reducing annual operating expenses by EUR880 mil. It is continuing with the full benefit expected during the second half of 2010. Since the start of the program, ...

A few moments ago, Cyanogen announced version 5.0.6 of his ROM for HTC Nexus One and Motorola Droid. This release contains a whole plethora of bug fixes and enhancements for the Nexus One and a few for the Droid.

The release follows the drama with Cyanogen and the Ultimate Droid ROM creator The BlackDroid, which you can read about here and here, which explains the note at the bottom of Cyanogen's announcement that reads

"PS: Expect Ultimate Droid v11 soon! :):):) "

Check out the full changelog here:

Constant refreshing has finally paid off and the Verizon's official Incredible page is finally live.

Remember the staging site that was leaked yesterday and then quickly password protected? Well, Verizon did a bit more work on it to make it snazzy, added a pre-order date of April 19th, and released it into the wild. Check it out yourself.

The page is live following the official Incredible press release that we posted earlier today.

Can you feel the excitement yet?

Farewell rumors, hello solid information! Verizon has just put out a press release nailing down some details on the HTC Droid Incredible. We're all well acquainted with the stats by now, but we were unaware of the potential release date or price.

Well, on April 29th, for a cool $199 (After a $100 mail-in rebate) on a two year contract you can head down to your local Verizon store to get yourself some Snapdragon-powered, HTC Sense driven, Droidy goodness! Why wait for the Nexus One! Speaking of, I think mine's starting to feel a little Droid envy...

Last Updated: June 26th, 2011

In this article, I will discuss all kinds of aspects of rooting your Android phone and the benefits that come with it.

Maybe you've heard about "rooting" a phone from a friend or read about it somewhere on the Internet.  Maybe you even *kind of* know what it is but aren't sure what you can do with it. Or maybe you are already running a rooted phone and looking for more ways you can utilize it. Whatever the case may be, this article is for you.

What Is Rooting?

First, for the newbies, let me clarify what rooting is. Getting ...

Twitter Android app, image courtesy of neurosoftware.ro

After last week's acquisition of Tweetie by Twitter itself, we've been kind of expecting this, and now it's official: Twitter is going to have an official Android application.

@ev, Evan Williams, Twitter's CEO made the announcement today at the company's first ever developer conference, called Chirp. He didn't specify whether the official app would be a ported version of Tweetie or a brand new application, or whether Tweetie developers would be involved in its development.

Tweetie produced clients for Mac and iPhone before getting acquired by Twitter on April 9th.

More details to come as new information trickles ...

If you were following the news at all yesterday regarding anything to do with ROMs and the Android dev community, then you might have heard or read about what has been going on between Cyanogen and DroidForums.net (and The BlackAndroid who developed the Ultimate Droid ROM).

In short, Cyanogen, a well respected, if not the most respected, Android ROM developer, called out another developer by the name of The BlackAndroid for ripping part of his code without giving credit. Instead of a peaceful resolution and an apology, harsh words were thrown around and Cyanogen ended up getting banned from DroidForums.net ...

Verizon just posted a semi-official confirmation of the long awaited HTC Droid Incredible coming to their network on April 29th.

The announcement is semi-official because it was posted to their staging site, which is now password protected. A staging server is normally used for testing pages that are going to production but it didn't make it anywhere official yet, so things are still subject to change.

As a refresher, HTC Incredible's specs, leaked a few days ago, are as follows:

  • 1GHz Snapdragon CPU
  • 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi
  • 8MP camera with autofocus
  • 8GB internal storage
  • 512MB ROM and 512MB RAM
  • 3.7" WVGA

Today the official Android fragmentation chart was finally updated by Google to show the most up-to-date breakdown of various versions of Android out in the wild. The data was collected from devices which accessed the Android Market between March 29th and April 12th.

Fragmentation of Android is my main concern for the future of the platform. With Google’s rapid release schedule, phone manufacturers are struggling to keep up with the latest versions and some new, low budget phones are being released with Android 1.5 or 1.6 instead of 2.1. Hopefully, this will be corrected in the next version of Android...

Motorola customers with Android phones rejoice! It looks like the bulk of you can expect to have Android 2.1 rolled out to your handsets by the Q3 of this year, unless, that is, you own the DEXT (the European Cliq) or, surprisingly, the Devour.

Not a whole lot of surprises here, but it’s nice to a see a carrier be so upfront with their release schedule rather than forcing their users to dredge through seedy internet forums in order to hear what someone’s cousin’s friend’s brother who works at a cell phone stand in the mall said about the next ...

Today seems to be the day of drama in the wonderful Android world that we live in. It’s no secret that people rip apps off the Android market and post them elsewhere for free. It’s also no surprise that with Open Source material, people base their apps/Roms off others' work and with that, you always give credit where credit is due.

However, a certain someone, named The BlackAndroid, over at DroidForums, would rather take people’s work, mod it and call it his own. Even better is that they he actually insulted the creator of the source he used, and ...

Well, we finally have some specs to match up with the mysterious photos that have been floating around the web for last few days of a new and very square Motorola Android handset.

Another Ridiculous AT&T Phone?

We held off on reporting on the picture itself, because the story of its existence and lack of any additional information made the entire thing seem suspect. Now, though, we have some more details as Android France has released the specs for the handset, purportedly named Motorola Twist, and if you look carefully, you can see that it supports the 850/1900 WCDMA radio ...

  • 8MP camera with autofocus
  • 8GB internal storage
  • 512MB ROM and 512MB RAM
  • 3.7" WVGA 480x800 px OLED touch screen

  • 312 min talk time / 149 hours standby time
  • 4.59oz

Intel Atom Android
11

Most, if not all, Android phones on the market run exclusively on an ARM architecture and Intel wants a piece of the action.

On Tuesday (that is today), Intel announced that it had ported Android to run on its Atom CPU line. Intel calls Atom its smallest chip, built with the world's smallest transistors. Atom is aimed at portable devices and consumes only 1-2.5W of power.

To make things even more interesting, Renee James, general manager of IDF (Intel Developer Forum) in Beijing, said the company has plans to port *all* mobile operating systems, not just Android, to ...
